MORGANTOWN- WV - The Connecticut Tigers (20-14) lost on a walk-off single from Clark Eagan in the bottom of the ninth inning against the West Virginia Black Bears, affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The loss is the first time the Tigers have been walked-off on this season.
In the ninth inning Matt Diorio hit a fly ball to left centerfield that Padron and Havrilak miscommunicated on and the ball ended up landing and bouncing over the fence for a lead-off ground-rule double. Eventually, runner were a second and third and one out when Clark Eagan grounded a ball up the middle to end the game, 4-3.
The Tigers fought back from an early 1-0 deficit with a three-run, four-hit fifth inning. Daniel Pinero and Austin Athmann kicked off the inning with back-to-back singles. Victor Padron bunted over the runners to line up the inning for the top of the order. Will Savage converted with a sacrifice fly to right to get the Tigers on the board and tie the game up at one a piece Cole Bauml followed with a RBI-double past the diving leftfielder Hunter Owen, giving the Tigers their first lead of the series.
Blaise Salter added to the scoring with an RBI-single into left field that scored Bauml from second and the Tigers led 3-1. Salter collected his ninth multi-hit game of the season with two hits again tonight.
Gregory Soto couldn't hold the lead though for Connecticut as the Black Bears quickly answered in the bottom of the fifth. After a sacrifice fly from Stephen Alemais, Hunter Owen smoked an RBI-triple to the left centerfield gap to tie the game at 3.
Joe Navilhon pitched exceptionally well tonight out of the pen and got the Tigers out of the fifth inning with a strikeout of cleanup hitter Will Craig. Navilhon also escaped a jam in the sixth inning when he faced runners at the corners with one away. Navilhon induced a 6-4-3 double play ball to get out of trouble and keep the game tied.
The Tigers try to salvage the series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. when Austin Sodders takes the ball for Connecticut.
