Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

NILES, O.H. - The Williamsport Crosscutters broke through a 1-1 deadlock into the eighth inning and took the first of three games from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 4-1 at Eastwood Field. With its win, the Crosscutters moved to 3-4 versus Mahoning Valley this season.

It took four batters for the game's first run to score. Williamsport's Madison Stokes singled with two outs. Edwin Rodriguez stepped in and rocketed his eighth double to deep left center field to bring Stokes in from first and give the Crosscutters a 1-0 lead.

Mahoning Valley squandered an opportunity in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Tre Gantt was hit by a pitch and Tyler Freeman singled to lead off the inning. With his single, Freeman extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Mitch Reeves popped out, Hosea Nelson struck out swinging, and Angel Lopez grounded out to follow - stranding both runners.

The Scrappers tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Henry Pujols slugged his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, to tie the game at 1-1.

That score held until the eighth inning when Williamsport plated two runs off of Scrappers reliever Adoni Kery. Rafael Marchan led off the frame with a double to left field, and Madison Stokes followed two pitches later with a single that moved Marchan to third. Edwin Rodriguez then belted a bases-clearing triple past a diving Tre Gantt in right-center field. That gave Williamsport a 3-1 lead.

After Ben Pelletier's groundout moved Rodriguez to third base, Jesus Henriquez's sacrifice fly to right-center brought another run in to give Williamsport an insurmountable 4-1 lead.

Scrappers starter Zach Draper twirled six innings, allowing an earned run on five hits. He walked one and struck out three batters.

With Mahoning Valley's loss and Auburn's win versus West Virginia, the Scrappers' Pinckney Division lead is cut to 4.0 games. Mahoning Valley also fell to 1.5 games back of Hudson Valley for the league's best record. The Renegades won, 4-2, over Lowell and moved to 28-14 on the season.

The Scrappers (26-15) and Crosscutters (17-25) continue its series on Tuesday at Eastwood Field. Mahoning Valley's Juan Mota (2-3, 5.91 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Williamsport's Ethan Lindow (1-1, 2.43). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
