Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, Ct. - Sam McMillan and Nick Ames tallied back-to-back RBI singles with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth to earn a sixth walkoff win for the Connecticut Tigers (21-20) over the Vermont Lake Monsters (20-23) by a final score of 4-3 on Monday at Dodd Stadium.

Tigers shortstop Isrrael De La Cruz led off the ninth inning with an infield single and center fielder Reece Hampton followed with a screamer down the first base line that he stretched into a double. With runners at second and third, Vermont intentionally walked the bases loaded. Bryce Nightengale (Loss, 0-2) gave up the decisive runs on a single to right field by McMillan that scored De La Cruz and a broken-bat flare into left field by Ames that plated Hampton for the game-winning run. Connecticut has six walkoff wins in 22 home games at Dodd Stadium this season.

Hampton cut the Vermont lead to 3-2 in the seventh inning on a single to right field that scored De La Cruz from second base. De La Cruz led the Tigers with three runs and Hampton went 3-for-4 at the plate with a single, a double, and an RBI triple that scored De La Cruz in the fifth. As the 8-9 hitters, De La Cruz and Hampton combined to go 4-for-5 with two walks and four runs.

Trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning, Vermont rallied for three runs against Tigers starter Gio Arriera. Reliever Felix Viloria (Win, 1-0) entered with the bases loaded and nobody out to strand all three runners with three straight outs including a strikeout. In his second appearance since rejoining Connecticut from West Michigan, Viloria pitched three perfect innings with two strikeouts.

Arriera pitched six shutout innings to start the game before giving up three earned runs in the seventh without recording an out. He finished with four strikeouts and McMillan threw out two Vermont base stealers at second base in the fifth. The Tigers won their first game when trailing after eight complete innings.

On Tuesday, the Tigers match up with their Stedler Division rivals in the second of three games during a midweek series at Dodd Stadium. Connecticut right-handed starter Chance Kirby (2-1, 2.65) throws the first pitch against Vermont at 7:05 p.m on One-Dollar Hot Dog Tuesday. Coverage on the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott Connecticut Tigers Radio Network begins with Kevin Gehl and Elijah Gonzalez at 6:50 p.m. on WICH 1310 AM and online at CTTigers.com.
