Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (38-27) allowed four runs in the 11th inning to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (29-35) on Saturday, losing by a final of 7-3 in front of 1,517 at Falcon Park. It was the third game in the last six for Auburn that had gone into extra frames, and the Doubledays are 0-3 in those games.
Left Fielder Hunter Jones lead off the 11th for Mahoning Valley with a double to left field. Right fielder Eric Gonzalez moved Jones to third with a sacrifice bunt. After a walk was issued to 2B Robel Garcia, Auburn brought in LHP Andrew Wall to face left-handed batter CF Aaron Siliga. With Siliga at the plate, Jones got caught in a rundown between third and home, and eventually got called safe at third, a call Doubledays manager Gary Cathcart did not agree with, and he let his disagreement be known before being ejected from the game. That seemed to be the tipping point for Auburn, as the Scrappers got three consecutive hits following the ejection to put the game out of reach.
The game was a back-and-forth battle prior to going into extra-innings, with neither team able to put up more than one run in a frame. Auburn took the initial 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double from RF Brandon Miller. Each team then scored a run in the third. In the top of the inning the Scrappers scored without getting a hit. Jones walked to begin the frame, he advanced to second on a fielding error by 1B Shawn Pleffner, and then proceeded to steal third. Jones scored from third on a sacrifice fly to right by DH Joe Wendle. The Doubledays answered in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly of their own from LF Wander Ramos.
Mahoning Valley scored the next two runs to take a 3-2 lead. In the fourth 1B Evan Frazar had an RBI double to right. In the fifth it was SS Dorssys Paulino who drove in a run with a double. Auburn tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when 2B Tony Renda drove a single to left. Third baseman Carlos Lopez was able to score from second on Renda's single. Renda finished the night with four hits, giving him 10 over his last four games, all of which have been multi-hit games.
It was RHP Gilberto Mendez (0-1) who allowed Jones to reach base in the 11th, thus making him culpable for the loss. RHP David Fischer started for Auburn and went five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks while striking out six. RHP Jack Wagoner (3-5) got the win for Mahoning Valley. He pitched the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run, while surrendering just one hit and striking out four.
The Doubledays conclude the home portion of their 2012 regular-season schedule when they face the Scrappers on Sunday August 26. Auburn will send LHP Brett Mooneyham (1-2) to the mound for his eighth start of the summer. He will match up against RHP Luis Morel (2-4) for Mahoning Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm. It will be another Time Warner customer discount night, with all children 12 and under invited to run the bases following the game courtesy of the Tompkins Trust Company. Tickets available by calling the Doubledays box office at 315-255-2489 or by going online to www.auburndoubledays.com.
