Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - In their third try to get back to the .500 mark, the Lowell Spinners could once again not get over the hump as the offense was quiet through 10 innings, allowing the Connecticut Tigers to leave town with a 10th inning win on a Jake Stewart home run, 2-1 at LeLacheur Park Sunday evening.
Lowell (32-34) got on the board in the first inning for the second straight night, with Matty Johnson again leading off the game with a walk. A ground-out advanced Johnson to second and he would come around to score on a Deven Marrero RBI single to right, giving the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
Pat Light, making his final home start of the season kept the Tigers off the board for the first three frames, striking out two while allowing just two hits before giving way to Raynel Velette.
Connecticut (29-36) pulled even in the fifth inning. Edgar Corcino led off the inning with a bunt single, narrowly beating Velette to the bag in a race to make the play. A one-out walk advanced Corcino to second and Jared Reaves followed with a double to left, scoring Corcino to knot the score at one.
Velette settled in after that, allowing just the one run on five hits, striking out three in six innings of long relief, but the Spinners were unable to get anything going offensively, stranding Johnson at third with one-out in the sixth and a leadoff single by Jake Davies in the seventh.
The Tigers took advantage of the Spinners left-on-base in the top half of the 10th when Stewart took a 1-2 Gerardo Olivares (1-1, 4.26) pitch and rifled it over the left field wall, striking the scoreboard halfway up with the ball still rising.
Aneury Tavarez had a one-out single in the bottom half of the inning, advancing to third when Matt Davenport's pick-off attempt skittered past Corcino, but Oscar Perez went down swinging to end the game.
The Spinners had just four hits on the night, with Johnson, Marrero, Davies and Tavarez each singling, struggling to put anything together offensively.
The Stedler Division leading Tri-City ValleyCats continue their preparations for the playoffs when they arrive at LeLacheur Park for a brief two-game series Monday. Spinners' ace William Cuevas eyes the franchise record for single-season wins when he goes for his eighth win of the season for a 7:05 first pitch. New England Patriots great Roland James will be on hand, singing autographs as part of New England Patriots night at the park.
