Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS (Sunday, August 26): The Hudson Valley Renegades blanked the Aberdeen IronBirds 3-0 Sunday afternoon in front of 4,954 fans at Dutchess Stadium. The win was the ninth straight (and capped a third consecutive sweep) for the surging Renegades (46-20), who trimmed their magic number to lock up a playoff berth to one game. The IronBirds (25-41) fell for the fifth game in a row, and trail Hudson Valley in the season series between the squads 10-1. The 'Gades have taken the last nine games between Aberdeen and Hudson Valley.
Neither team was able to score until the Renegades broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning. Second baseman Felix Gonzalez laced a leadoff single through the middle off Aberdeen starter Sebastian Vader (1-7). Center fielder Joey Rickard bounced a grounder to third that Hector Veloz played off his hands into left field, allowing Gonzalez to reach second and Rickard to make it to first. Left fielder Marty Gantt dropped down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Gonzalez to third and Rickard to second with just one away. Third baseman Richie Shaffer came to the plate, and drove in both runners with a line-drive single to center field, making it 2-0 Renegades.
Hudson Valley added a bit of cushion in the bottom of the eighth inning. Gantt drew a leadoff walk, and moved up to second on a wild pitch from Aberdeen reliever Elias Pinales. After Shaffer bounced out to third, Pinales fired another wild pitch to allow Gantt to reach third base with one out. Dunn worked his own walk, putting runners on the corners with one out. Shortstop Leonardo Reginatto dropped down a safety squeeze bunt that scored Gantt from third and moved Dunn to second base. The Renegades left the eighth inning with their 3-0 lead, which held up in the ninth inning for the shutout win.
Starter Jesse Hahn turned in his third straight superb start for the Renegades, allowing just a hit and a walk over five innings while whiffing a season-high seven. Brandon Henderson (5-2) tossed three shutout hittings for the win, striking out two and giving up just one hit. Ryan Garton worked a scoreless ninth for his sixth save, allowing a hit and a walk.
Vader took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk against five strikeouts over six innings. Pinales coughed up a run on a hit and two walks over 1.1 innings, fanning three. Jesse Fernandez allowed an inherited runner to score but allowed no baserunners in his 0.2 inning appearance.
The Renegades will look for their tenth consecutive victory Monday at Staten Island, with lefty Matt Spann taking the bump for the Renegades. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with Ben Gellman's pregame show set for 6:45 on 1450 and 1370 AM WKIP, as well as online at HVRenegades.com.
Great seats are still available for all of the remaining Renegades regular season games, and playoff tickets are also now on sale. Call the ticket office 845-838-0094 for information or go to www.hvrenegades.com !
