TROY, NY --- The Tri-City ValleyCats scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning for an early eight-run lead and cruised to a 9-4 New York-Penn League victory on Sunday night at Bruno Stadium over the Vermont Lake Monsters, who have now lost eight straight overall and completed their second straight winless six-game roadtrip.

After a Preston Tucker RBI double gave Tri-City a 1-0 lead in the first, M.P. Cokinos led off the second with a solo homer to left off Vermont starter Michael Ynoa. The ValleyCats went on to send 11 batters to the plate in the second as Ynoa was able to retire just one of the eight batters he faced in the inning. Ynoa left after a bases loaded walk to Jesse Wiezrzbicki gave Tri-City a 5-0 lead and Dan Gulbransen greeted reliever Seth Streich with a three-run double to center to complete the seven-run inning, the most runs allowed in an inning by the Lake Monsters this season.

The Vermont bullpen was able to settle down after the second inning, allowing just one more run on three more hits over the next six innings. That included a pair of hitless innings for  Tucker Healy and Omar Duran, who struckout two in his two scoreless innings and has 32 strikeouts among his 50 outs recorded in 16 2/3 innings.

The Lake Monsters were able to put a little offense together in the middle innings as they scored a pair of runs in the fourth followed by one run in both the fifth and sixth innings. Daniel Robertson and Jacob Tanis had RBI singles in the fourth, while John Wooten an RBI single in the fifth. After Robertson reached on a throwing error to start the sixth, Tanis doubled down the rightfield line for his second RBI of the game and cut the Vermont deficit to 8-4.

T ri-City got a run in the bottom of sixth without the benefit of a hit as Gulbransen walked, went to second on one of four Vermont wild pitches, stole third and scored on a Cokinos sacrifice fly. Brady Rogers (7-2) allowed three runs on six hits over five innings for the win and Euris Quezada one unearned run on two hits with five istrikeouts over three innings for Tri-City (49-18), which won its fourth straight game as the Stedler Division champion readies for the playoffs.

Tanis went 2-for-2 with a walk and hit by pitch to reach base safely in all four plate appearances for Vermont (27-39), which is 3-15 in its last 18 games since being 24-24 on August 6th. Brett Vertigan was 2-for-5 with his fifth double in the last four games and extended his hitting streak to nine games (15-for-40), while  Wooten went 2-for-4 with a walk and has reached safely by hit or walk in 59 of 64 games played.

While Vermont has lost 12 straight road games for the first time since August 2005 to fall to 9-27 in away games, the Lake Monsters have fared much better at home with an 18-12 record at historic Centennial Field. Vermont returns home for a quick two-game series against the Connecticut Tigers on Monday and Tuesday at 7:05 pm. Monday is Goodwill Industries Night with fans receiving one free general admission ticket with a donation of at least one bag of gently used clothing.
