New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The Scorpions took control in the third period and beat Rocky Mountain 5-3 on "Lobo Night." After a tight first two periods, New Mexico took control with a three-goal third period.

The Scorpions spent most of the first period in the offensive zone but settled for a tie after the first period. Rocky Mountain got on the board first with a breakaway goal from Dominic Noel.

It didn't take long for the Scorpions to tie the game up. Lance Herauf knocked a rebound home, his tenth goal of the year, tying the contest at one.

The Rage wasted no time reclaiming the lead early in the second period when Trevor Weisgerber picked up his 14th goal of the season. The Scorpions won the draw following face-off and Konrad Reeder tied the game up just 11-seconds later.

The third period was all Scorpions as they took the lead for the first time and never looked back. Ryan McLeod lit the lamp for the 17th time this season as the Scorpions led for the first time 1:36 into the final frame.

Herauf picked up his second goal of the game. Just like his first tally, he put a rebound home for the eventual game winner. Less then a minute later the Scorpions went to the power play and capitalized. Craig Macdonald redirected an Aaron MacInnis shot to the net giving the Scorps their final goal of the night.

The fans inside the Santa Ana Star Center were treated to a Kevin Harvey show. Late in the third period Rocky Mountain captain Dan Vandermeer challenged Harvey to a fight. The only one who threw punches was Harvey who landed two rights and Vandermeer ended up on the ice.

As Harvey was on the ice getting up, Rage forward John DiPace jumped into the pile and wanted a piece of Harvey. Two weeks ago, the two squared off at the beginning of the game with Harvey with the battle. Unfortunately for DiPace, his fate was the same as Harvey used big right hands to finish his second fight of the shift.

The Rage's Chip Dunleavy added a late goal to make the final margin look a little better for the visitors. The win gave the Scorpions their seventh win in the last eight games while Rocky Mountain has dropped their last three contests.

On Saturday, the Scorpions will host the Lubbock Cotton Kings. The first 1,500 fans inside the Santa Ana Star Center will receive a limited edition, team trading card set, courtesy of Starline Printing. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

Come see the young, tough and exciting New Mexico Scorpions at the Santa Ana Star Center . Flex plan tickets are still available for the remainder of the 2006-07 season. Fans can become a partial Scorpions season ticket holder by choosing as little as four games to attend the rest of the season by calling the Scorpions office at (505) 881-PUCK [7825] or by visiting www.scorpionshockey.com.
