York Revolution News Release
Nick Schumacher worked into the eighth inning to win his York Revolution debut, and the Revs defeated the Long Island Ducks 7-5 for their fifth consecutive win on Thursday night at Sovereign Bank Stadium. The Revs move to a season-high six games ahead of Lancaster for first place in the second half, shrinking their magic number to 12 games to clinch the division crown.
One night after scoring five times in the first inning and four more runs in the second inning, the Revs used a four-run first inning to put the Ducks in an early hole.
Ramon Castro drove in Scott Grimes on an infield single for the game's first run. Grimes led off with a double to left, and crossed the plate for the league-leading 88th time this season. Bryant Nelson added a sacrifice fly on a line drive to right, and Chris Nowak made it a 4-0 lead with a two-run homerun down the left field line, his 22nd homerun of the season.
Schumacher debuted with scoreless frames in the first two innings before Matt Padgett connected on an opposite field homerun to left leading off the third. But Schumacher came back to retire the next six consecutive batters, settling right back into a groove.
Kennard Jones smacked a two-out RBI single to left field in the fifth inning bringing Long Island within 4-2, but the Revs came back with an answer of their own.
Octavio Martinez laid down a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt in the bottom of the sixth, plating Nowak who had led off with a double to increase the lead back to three. Jose Herrera then lined an RBI single to left-center in the seventh inning as the lead grew back to four runs at 6-2, with Herrera's hitting streak climbing to 10 consecutive games in the process.
Jones slammed a homerun to right field with one out in the eighth, snapping a streak of eight consecutive batters retired by Schumacher, but the right-hander lasted 7.1 innings, scattering eight hits and allowing just three runs for the win. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
York recovered that run in the bottom of the eighth when Grimes lined an RBI single to left, as the lead again reached four runs at 7-3. The Revs scored a run in each of their final three innings of offense to pull away late in the game.
Padgett drove a two-run double to deep right-center in the top of the ninth, but closer Michael Nix came back to record the final two outs with the tying run at the plate, securing the win.
Ducks starter Dave Williams (1-3) suffered the loss, charged with six runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings, just six days after holding the Revs scoreless on only two hits in a six-inning performance at Long Island.
