Schueneman Earns USHL Defenseman of the Week Award

January 6, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

Urbandale (IA) Sometimes it's difficult for a defenseman's hard work to be validated on the main scoresheet, but that wasn't the case for the Des Moines Buccaneers' Cory Schueneman. The veteran defenseman from Milford, MI registered five assists and was a +10 rating in the Buccaneers' three games over the weekend and on Monday was named the United States Hockey League, and CCM, Defenseman of the Week.

He is the first Buccaneers' defenseman honored this season and the first Des Moines' player since goalie Billy Christopoulos took home the goalie of the week award Dec. 16th to be recognized by the league.

The highlight of Schueneman's weekend came Saturday during the Buccaneers' 9-5 home win over Fargo when he assisted on three goals and finished at +5 in the rating column. He also assisted on a goal Friday at Omaha and Sunday versus Muskegon.

For the season, Schueneman has 10pts (1 goal, 9 assists) while appearing in all 29 of the Buccaneers' games.

Schueneman is in his second season in the USHL after joining the team in early January of 2013. He is committed to play his collegiate hockey at Western Michigan University.

The Des Moines Buccaneers are in their 34th consecutive season in the United States Hockey League. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
