LYNCHBURG, Va. - Hillcats outfielder Anthony Santander earned Carolina League Player of the Week Award after hitting .435 batting average with a staggering 1.000 slugging percentage and 1.480 OPS in a five-game stretch. Santander becomes the third position player to be honored as a Player of the Week, joining Mike Papi and Yu-Cheng Chang. The Hillcats have also claimed two Pitcher of the Week honors with Julian Merryweather and Sean Brady.

For the week from July 11 through July 17, Santander went 10-23 with a double, four home runs, nine RBIs and seven runs scored. He has hit four home runs in his last four games, two from each side of the plate. The 21-year-old Venezuelan has hit safely in 22 of his last 24 games, registering 28 RBIs during that stretch to pass Bobby Bradley for the league lead with 68 for the season.

After a season-long 12-game hitting streak snapped Thursday, Santander wasted no time starting a new one with a pair of homers Saturday. It marked the third multi-homer game of his career, and he set a career high with six RBIs after hitting a grand slam batting right-handed in the fourth and a two-run homer swinging left-handed in the ninth to homer from each side of the plate in that contest. Santander followed that performance by tying a career high in hits Sunday afternoon on a 4-5 day at the plate that featured another right-handed home run.

Santander ranks third in the Carolina League with 14 home runs, fourth with 25 doubles and fifth with a slugging percentage of .494 for the season. He leads all players with 68 RBIs and is tied with Chang for third in the league with 61 runs scored. His batting average of .290 is six points shy of cracking the top 10 on the circuit.

Lynchburg plays at Wilmington Monday at 6:35 p.m., and returns to Frawley Stadium Tuesday morning to wrap up its seven-day road trip at 11:05 a.m. The Hillcats return home for Christmas in July presented by Auto-Owners Insurance Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Fans can follow every game on 93.3 FM and 1320 AM as well as www.lynchburg-hillcats.com .
