Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick, Md. -Donnie Hart became the 149th former Keys player to reach the Major Leagues on Sunday when he pitched 0.2 of an inning of relief against the Tampa Bay Rays. Needing just six pitches, he retired both men he faced while recording his first big league strikeout. This year, five different ex-Keys have made their MLB debuts. In addition to Hart, this list includes: Steven Brault (Pirates), Ariel Miranda, Ty Kelly (Mets) and Ashur Tolliver.
Hart, 25, had his contract selected by Baltimore on July 15 after beginning the season with the Double-A Bowie Baysox. In 33 appearances, the Texan went 2-0 with two saves and a 2.31 ERA. Over 39 innings, he allowed 10 earned runs, walked seven and struck out 43. Opponents were batting .234 against him, while left-handed hitters were limited to a .158 clip (9-for-57). Hart was named to the Eastern League All-Star team.
A member of the 2015 Keys, the southpaw joined Frederick on June 16 after beginning the year with the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds. In 27 appearances, he went 5-1 with three saves and a 1.03 ERA (35 IP/4ER) and limited opponents to a .208 batting average.
Called up to the Eastern League on September 3, Hart would win an Eastern League Championship with the Baysox before finishing out his year in the Arizona Fall League. Pitching for the Peoria Javelinas, he was selected for the Fall Stars Game.
Originally taken by the Orioles in the 27th round of 2013 draft, Hart played his college baseball at Texas State. As a junior he pitched in 41 games and registered a 2.13 ERA, while surrendering only four hits in his final 18 games.
