Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Winston-Salem was unable to respond to a pair of six-run innings and dropped a 15-2 final to Myrtle Beach in the third of a four-game series on Monday at BB&T Ballpark.
Mason Robbins, who went 2-for-3 on the night for his team-leading 31st multi-hit game, scored Gerson Montilla from second with a single to give the Dash a 1-0 lead in the first.
The Pelicans (13-12, 49-46) responded in the top of the second with their initial six-run inning off right-hander Tanner Banks (4-2). The Dash starter lasted 1.2 innings and gave up six runs on five hits.
Banks loaded the bases with a David Bote walk, a Jeffrey Baez single and an Erick Castillo plunking to start the second. Andrew Ely's sacrifice fly scored the first Pelicans run. After four more runs, Yasiel Balaguert finished Banks' night with a ground rule double down the right field line to cap the inning.
The Dash (11-13, 39-55) tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 6-2 as Myrtle Beach starter Jonathan Martinez (7-5) walked in Marcus Davis from third. Martinez tossed six innings, giving up one earned run on six hits.
The second six-run frame came in the third off Ryan Riga, who finished the night with six hits and five earned runs in 1.1 innings. A trio of singles from Ely, Charcer Burks and Daniel Spingola loaded the bases and forced in the ninth run when Riga walked Gleyber Torres. Balaguert put the exclamation point on once again in the third with a double to left field that scored Burks, Spingola and Torres, putting Myrtle Beach up 12-2.
The Pelicans added three more runs off right-hander Kelvis Valerio in the fourth and fifth innings combined, but brother Robinson Leyer and Euclides Leyer held Myrtle Beach scoreless for the four remaining innings in relief. Myrtle Beach's Tommy Thorpe and Daury Torrez replaced Martinez in the seventh for three final innings without a Dash run, finalizing the score at 15-2.
The Dash look to even the series at two on Tuesday at 12 p.m. in the final home game against Myrtle Beach this season. Winston-Salem will send right-hander Thad Lowry (6-6, 4.05 ERA), who stands second in the Carolina League in innings (102.1). Lowry will face off with Pelicans right-hander Jeremy Null (2-4, 4.94 ERA).
The pregame Dash begins at 11:45 a.m., and fans can tune in on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App. For tickets to the final game of this homestand, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
