Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - Francisco Santana's RBI double in the bottom of the eighth pushed the Charleston RiverDogs past the Augusta GreenJackets, 6-5, in front of 4,857 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Thursday night.

With the victory, Charleston collects its third straight victory and eighth in the last nine games against Augusta in improving to 10-11 and 41-49 overall. Augusta drops back-to-back games for the first time since July 1 vs. Charleston and falls to 10-11 and 51-40 overall.

Charleston trailed 5-4 entering the eighth, when Rob Lyerly increased his hitting streak to eight games with a single to centerfield against reliever Hector Correa with one out. Kyle Higashioka moved him to third with a double of the left-centerfield wall.

Augusta summoned All-Star reliever Jose Casilla from the bullpen, but the RiverDogs knotted the game at 5-5, when Emerson Landoni's groundout allowed Lyerly to score. Santana then stroked a RBI double to barely inside the left field line that scored Higashioka, giving the RiverDogs a 6-5 lead going in the final inning.

Francisco Gil allowed a two-out single in the ninth, but got All-Star third baseman Chris Dominguez to groundout to Kelvin Castro at shortstop for his fourth save of the season.

The scoreboard didn't stay dim for long Thursday night, as both clubs opened the game up with two-run frames.

Charleston starter Mike Solbach gave up back-to-back hits to Evan Crawford and Nick Liles to open the game then hit Ryan Cavan to load the bases for Dominguez. Dominguez grounded into a double play that allowed Crawford to come home from third, giving Augusta a 1-0 advantage.

A wild pitch from Solbach allowed Liles to move home to put the GreenJackets up 2-0 going into the bottom of the first.

Solbach took the no-decision after going 5.0 full innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts.

DeAngelo Mack roped 16th double of the season with one out in the bottom half, and Jimmy Parades' triple off the wall in right-centerfield scored the former South Carolina Gamecock to put Charleston on the board, 2-1. Neil Medchill's RBI single plated Parades and squared the score back up at 2-2 going into the second.

The 2-2 stalwart lasted until the top of the fifth. Dan Cook opened the frame with a single to right, and moved into scoring position on Ydwin Villegas's bunt single. Solbach's throwing error to first on Crawford's sacrifice bunt allowed Dan Cook to come home, giving Augusta a 3-2 lead.

Augusta loaded the bases with one out, but Solbach fanned Dominguez on three pitches, and Mack made a sensational sliding catch in the right-field bullpen on Luke Anders' fly ball to end the threat.

Dominguez's RBI double in the top of the seventh against Jose Ramirez added some cushion to the Augusta lead, scoring Nick Liles from second, upping the margin to 4-2. The lead grew to three runs when Luke Anders' RBI single to right plated Dominguez, giving Augusta a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

The RiverDogs bit into the GreenJackets' lead in the bottom half, when Jimmy Parades' second triple of the game plated Landoni and Castro, to cut the lead to one, 5-4 Augusta going into the eighth. Paredes became the first RiverDog to stroke multiple triples in a game since Melky Mesa and Dan Brewer turned that trick in June 2009 against Augusta.

In his first relief outing of the season, Ramirez (3-4), who had not pitched since July 2, picks up the win for Charleston -- his first since May 13 vs. Augusta -- after fanning three and giving up two earned runs in 3.0 innings of work.

Correa (2-2) takes the loss for Augusta after surrendering two earned runs on three hits in just 1.0 inning on the mound.

Mack joined Paredes as the only RiverDogs with two-hit performances,

Game three of this five-game series is set for Friday at 7:05 p.m., with Charleston sending right-hander Brett Marshall (1-0, 2.76) to the mound, while Augusta counters with right-hander Jeremy Toole (2-3, 4.12).

BALLPARK FUN: South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal, wearing a University of South Carolina national championship baseball shirt, threw the ceremonial first pitch. The RiverDogs, earlier in the day, hosted their annual CLE class for local attorneys in which Justice Toal presided. It was another Budweiser Thirsty Thursday at the park as fans got their weekends started early with $1 beers in the Ashley View Pub.

UP NEXT: It's another Force Protection Red Shirt Friday, with those fans rocking their red shirts to the ballpark getting $1 off the price of admission. Also, it's the club's second Fritos Family Friday, with six lucky "Be Your Own Fans" getting to take their ballpark experience beyond the stands!
