Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

The Kannapolis Intimidators battled back from one-run down in the bottom of the eighth, and in the tenth, but in the 11th inning, they could not match the run put up by the Lakewood BlueClaws, who won in 11 by the score of 6-5. The BlueClaws have won both of the two games played in the five game series.

Mike McGuire, in his first game since being signed by the Philadelphia Phillies worked a clean 11th inning for the save, stranding a leadoff walk at third base.

Both teams scored three runs in the third inning, the BlueClaws (14-6) on the strengths of a two-run double by Jonathan Singleton and a passed ball and the Intimidators all on a three-run double by Ian Gac after an error extended the inning. Both starters went five innings, Matt Hopps for the Intimidators (7-14) allowed a fourth run in the fourth and allowed two earned in his time, Brody Colvin did not allow an earned run in his five.

In the eighth inning off Luke Wertz, who had allowed just three runs in 41 innings this season, the Intimidators got a leadoff single from Tyler Saladino, one of three hits, who was sacrificed to second and singled home with two outs by Nick Ciolli, forcing extras.

After two strong innings from Matt Wickswat and two more from Taylor Thompson, Orlando Santos (0-1) pitched the tenth and got the first two in order but then allowed a single to Leandro Castro. With Castro on first, Singleton hit a single to left centerfield, and from an aggressive call from manager Mark Parent at third, he sent Castro who was flying around the bases, and he scored to take a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, off Ebelin Lugo (4-1), with a 1.32 ERA, Saladino again got to first, by a walk, and was sacrificed to second and brought home by a single by Jose Vargas. The Intimidators stranded the bases loaded that inning with just one out and then lost in the 11th.

The game is the first time this month the Intimidators went into extras and just the second time at home this season, they are 0-6 in their recent extra inning games. Jiwan James with a single in the first inning set a new BlueClaws record with a 22-game hitting streak.

The Intimidators will look for their first win in the series on Friday at 7:05 pm at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium as Cameron Bayne takes to the hill. He will be opposed by Trevor May.
