Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Jiwan James singled to center in the first to extend his hit streak to 22 games, breaking the BlueClaws franchise record in a 6-5 Lakewood win in an eleven inning thriller Thursday night.
James wasted no time breaking the record, as he led off the game with a single for the third night in a row. Ambiorix Reyes' 21 game mark stood since the BlueClaws (14-6) first season in 2001.
James went 2-for-6 on the night with a double, and is 27-85 during the streak (.318).
Jeremy Barnes made up for a costly error earlier in the game, bringing in the go-ahead run in the top of the eleventh on a base hit, and Michael McGuire picked up his first save of the season in his first appearance with the BlueClaws.
McGuire signed his contract to join the team just three hours prior to the game, and despite allowing the lead-off runner to reach he recorded the next three outs to seal the 6-5 win. Ebelin Lugo (4-1) got the win while Kannapolis (7-14) reliever Orlando Santos (0-1) took the loss.
The BlueClaws jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the third. James started the inning with a double, Jonathan Villar reached on a bunt single, and Jonathan Singleton doubled in two runs, with another run coming in on a wild pitch to put Lakewood up 3-0.
Kannapolis came right back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. An error by Jeremy Barnes with two outs and two on kept the Intimidators alive, and with the bases loaded Ian Gac's double put three runs on the board to tie the game.
Lakewood again took the lead in the fourth with Adam Buschini scoring on an error by shortstop Tyler Saladino. Buschini had a lead-off double to start the inning.
It took until the eighth for the Intimidators to even things up, as Nick Ciolli's RBI single knotted the game at four. Lakewood took the lead for the third time when a Jonathan Singleton base hit brought in Castro from third, but Kannapolis again tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Jose Vargas RBI base knock.
Friday night at 7:05 pm the teams will meet for the third game of the five game series.
