Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Greenville Drive on Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah. Every Gnat who played, contributed: all nine players in the Savannah (9-12/51-40) lineup had at least one hit, starter Taylor Whitenton won his second straight start, and the bullpen held Greenville (14-7/50-41) to one run over the final four innings.
After the Drive evened the game at 1-1 in the top of the second, the Gnats took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning. Savannah second baseman Alonzo Harris singled, stole second and scored when SS Wilfredo Tovar dropped a single into shallow right-centerfield. Tovar, who was 2-4, was the only Gnat with more than one hit. The Gnats made it 3-1 in the fifth inning. With two outs, RF Cesar Puello ripped a double inside the chalk along the leftfield line. 3B Jefry Marte followed with a drive deep to right that Drive RF Ronald Bermudez never saw. The ball landed in front of the warning track scoring Puello from second, as Marte hustling all the way, picked up a triple, his fourth of the season.
Whitenton worked around runners in every inning except the first, but held the Drive to one run in five innings to win his second straight start. The Gnats bullpen of Sammy Martinez, Guillaume Leduc and Michael Powers combined to give up one run in the final four innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Powers earned his 12th save of the year.
Friday, the Gnats will send RHP John Church (5-0, 1.01) to the mound to take on RHP Pete Ruiz (5-6, 5.28) for the Drive. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and gates open at 6 pm. The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50.
