SANTA CRUZ, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (1-5) fell to the South Bay Lakers (4-2), 120-105, on Saturday night at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz, CA.
Guard Donovan Williams led both teams in scoring with 30 points on 11-for-19 shooting from the field. Guard Kendric Davis finished the night with 19 points, eight rebounds, and five assists while forward Gui Santos, on assignment from Golden State, collected 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Santa Cruz opened the contest on a 7-0 run and continued to ride their offensive momentum to start the game, shooting a perfect 10-10 (3-3 from three-point range) and leading by as many as 13 points. The Lakers responded quickly with a 10-0 run of their own to narrow the gap, and the Warriors closed out the frame with a slim 30-27 lead. A competitive second quarter saw both teams trading offensive blows and defensive stops before 11 unanswered Santa Cruz points allowed the Warriors to push ahead to a 51-38 advantage halfway through the second period. Davis and Williams combined for 31 first half points to give the Sea Dubs a 63-50 lead entering the break.
South Bay capitalized on a Santa Cruz lull at the start of the third quarter to orchestrate a 17-4 run and tie the score at 76 with 2:55 remaining in the period. Both teams continued to battle, and a Williams fast break, windmill dunk allowed the Warriors to punctuate the quarter on a high note and enter the final frame with an 87-84 lead. The Lakers opened the fourth quarter with an additional 10-0 run, building up to a seven-point lead mid-way through the frame. Williams ended the scoring drought for the Sea Dubs, sparking their own offensive run to cut the deficit back to 96-94. However, South Bay quickly regained control and held on to their advantage until the final buzzer, ending the contest with a 120-105 road win.
