Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
STOCKTON, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (0-1) were led by an energetic Juan Toscano-Anderson's 19 points and nine rebounds tonight, but could not keep pace with the Stockton Kings (1-0) as they took the season opener 122-97 tonight at Stockton Arena.
Toscano-Anderson narrowly missed a 20-10 game (19 points, nine rebounds) with less than 30 minutes of action, while Devyn Marble scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting off the bench tonight. Point guard Jeremy Pargo added 11 points along with team-highs of eight assists and four steals this evening.
The Kings were led by center Eric Mika's game-high 24 points on a blistering 8-of-12 from the field (66.7 percent) along with a game-high 16 rebounds (five offensive) in 35 minutes. Two-way guard Kyle Guy spurred Stockton's deep attack, securing 22 points on four made threes (4-of-10 3FG) and forward Cody Demps scored 15 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
The Warriors, who started the game shooting 0-of-6 from the behind the arc, hit two three-pointers midway through the second quarter to spur a 12-3 run to tie the game at 33-33. Stockton then took the offensive, ending the half on an 8-2 run punctuated by a Kyle Guy three at the buzzer.
Santa Cruz found themselves in an even deeper hole in the second half, as Stockton scored 76 points in the half thanks to a 10-of-14 shooting effort (71.4 percent 3FG) from behind the arc. Despite eight hustle points by Toscano-Anderson in the fourth, Stockton continued to build their lead up to 29 points thanks to Demps' 15 points in the quarter (3-of-3 from three) to secure the Opening Night win.
The Santa Cruz Warriors have yet to win a game at Stockton Arena since the franchise relocated to Stockton from Reno in 2018 (0-3 overall). The two teams will play again in Stockton on December 28.
The Warriors will now return to Santa Cruz to host the team's Opening Night at Kaiser Permanente Arena in a rematch against the Stockton Kings (7:00 p.m. tip-off).
