SANTA CRUZ, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (11-7) once again defeated the Iowa Wolves (4-15), 116-114, on Saturday evening at Kaiser Permanente Arena to sweep the series in front of a sold-out crowd.
Guard Donovan Williams led the Warriors with 23 points and added seven rebounds. Forward Javan Johnson followed closely with 21 points and five rebounds, and guard Pat Spencer added a double-double in the Sea Dubs win, notching 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists off the bench.
Four Wolves players finished the night with double-doubles in the loss. Guard Tyrese Martin finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds, and forward Leonard Miller had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Javonte Cooke added 17 points and 11 assists, and forward Nojel Eastern notched 16 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
The contest stayed competitive throughout the first quarter and featured six ties until a three-point shot from guard Marcus Burk gave the Warriors the lead with 26 seconds remaining in the quarter. However, the Wolves responded with a three-point shot from guard D.J. Carton, tying the game at 29 to close out the frame. The battle continued in the second quarter, as a fastbreak dunk gave the Wolves their first lead of the game, 31-29. Despite Miller and Martin's combined 20 points in the quarter, the Warriors kept the Wolves to a two-point advantage to end the half, 59-57.
Iowa built up their advantage to 13 points in the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game, 88-75. The Warriors responded with their own offensive push in the final minutes of the quarter, capped off by a Williams buzzer-beating reverse layup to end the frame trailing 90-83. Williams kept this energy to start the fourth quarter, as his emphatic fastbreak slam was the catalyst for an 11-0 Warriors run to reclaim a 90-89 lead. Two three-pointers from Spencer helped the Warriors gain a 107-98 lead, and the Sea Dubs held on in the final seconds to secure back-to-back wins over the visiting Iowa Wolves, 116-114.
