Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (10-7) overcame the Iowa Wolves (4-14), 128-122, on Friday evening at Kaiser Permanente Arena in front of a sold-out crowd.
The Warriors were led by forward Jackson Rowe with 24 points and five rebounds, followed closely by guard Donovan Williams with 22 points and five rebounds. Forward Javonte Green came off the bench in his first home appearance and contributed 21 points in the winning effort, and guard Kendric Davis rounded out the Santa Cruz offense with 20 points, 14 assists, and eight rebounds.
Forward Leonard Miller, on assignment from the Minnesota Timberwolves, led Iowa with 30 points and nine rebounds. Forward Lance Stephenson contributed 26 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists, and guard Tyrese Martin added 20 points and nine rebounds.
Iowa controlled the lead for most of the opening frame, but 10 first-quarter points from guard Pat Spencer allowed the Warriors to narrow the gap and end the period trailing 45-37. Iowa extended their lead by as many as 16 points in the second quarter, but the Warriors made key defensive adjustments to quickly notch six steals and deter the Wolves from scoring in the paint. A steal from Spencer gave way to a Green finger roll layup to cap off a 22-0 run late in the frame, pushing the Sea Dubs to a 76-74 lead at the half.
Green led the Sea Dubs with eight points in the third quarter as a combined Santa Cruz effort finished the frame with their largest lead of the game, 106-96. The Wolves clawed back late in the fourth quarter, punctuated by a three-pointer that gave Iowa a 119-118 lead. Blocks from Rowe and center Amida Brimah prevented Iowa from sparking offensive runs, and a Spencer three-pointer helped the Warriors reclaim the lead, 123-122, with 1:34 remaining in the frame. The Warriors held their lead through the final buzzer to secure the 128-122 win over the visiting Iowa Wolves.
The Santa Cruz Warriors will face the Iowa Wolves again at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Saturday, February 10 at 7 p.m. (PT).
