EL SEGUNDO, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (8-4) beat the South Bay Lakers (7-5), 130-126, on Tuesday night at UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo, CA.
The Warriors were led by two-way guard Lester Quinones with 37 points. Two-way forward Jerome Robinson followed with 20 points and five rebounds. Two-way center Usman Garuba secured a double-double, notching 18 points and 14 rebounds. Guard Kendric Davis added 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists to the win.
The Lakers were led by guard Quinndary Weatherspoon with 30 points and forward Louis King followed closely with 26 points. Guard Scotty Pippen Jr. posted 16 points, eight assists and six rebounds, and two-way center Colin Castleton secured a double-double, notching 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lakers dominated early in the contest, limiting the Warriors to 37.5 percent shooting in the first quarter. South Bay won the quarter, 36-26, with help from nine first-quarter points from King. The Warriors gained momentum in the second frame and outscored the Lakers 34-14 to go into the second half leading 60-50. The Warriors closed out the second quarter shooting 55.6 percent from the field and limited the Lakers to 22.2 percent shooting from the field. Garuba and Quinones led scoring in the first half with 14 points each.
The third quarter saw six lead changes, but the Warriors maintained a 10-point advantage heading into the final frame, 92-82. Five Warriors players closed out the third quarter in double-digits, led by Garuba with his fourth double-double of the season. The Lakers outscored the Warriors in the fourth quarter, 44-38, but could not close the gap, ultimately falling to the Warriors, 130-126.
