Sanford's Six Run Second Inning Stymies the Mountaineers

June 23, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

Sanford - The Sanford Mainers used a big second inning and lock down pitching to grab a 6-2 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers on a chilly Saturday night at Goodall Park as they hold on firmly to second place in the Northern Division and snapped their two-game skid. The Mainers improve to a perfect 3-0 against the Mountaineers on the 2018 season with the first two games being separated by only one run apiece.

Sanford's bats broke the game wide open early as in the bottom of the 2nd inning they brought across six runs on four hits, which proved to be all they would need for the win. After a pair of walks and bunt single by Nick Howie (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Eastern Kentucky) loaded the bases, Tyler Solomon (Haymarket, Va./Vanderbilt) came around to score as Austin Biggar (Lilburn, Ga./Georgia (U. of)) popped into an infield fly. Two batters later, after another walk reloaded the bases full of Mainers, Shane Marshall (Webster, N.Y./Binghamton) really got the party started as he smacked a two RBI single into center field that scored both Conner Shepherd (Upland, Calif./Texas Christian University) and Howie to give the Mainers a 3-0 lead with only one out in the inning.

The Mainers kept it coming as they flipped back to the top of the lineup and Jake Alu (Hamilton, N.J./Boston College) continued his red-hot play for the Moose ripping an RBI double that scored Brandon Lankford (Mocksville, N.C./UNC-Asheville). Not to be outdone, Johnny Rizer (Cypress, Texas/Texas Christian University) toed into the box and promptly laced a double down the line, the first of his three hits, that scored both Alu and Carmine Pagano (McLeansville, N.C./UNC-Asheville) to give the Mainers a 6-0 lead after two.

R.J. Hall (Marietta, Ga./Tufts) turned in his best start of the season on the hill for Sanford, an impressive four innings of two hit baseball with two strike outs and no runs surrendered. Hall was so good, in fact, that he retired the first eight batters he faced and nine of the first 10.

Vermont was able to get two runs back in the top of the 6th with some good two out hitting but the Mainers bull pen shut off the faucet from that point on. Over the final three innings, Angelo Smith (Thornton, Illinois/Michigan), John Murphy (Merchantville, N.J./Maryland) and Jack Weisenburger (Rockford, Mich./Michigan) combined for three scoreless innings allowing just a single hit and two lone base runners to slam the door shut and give the Mainers a big win.

Sanford will have a much-deserved day off on Sunday before going right back at it with six games in six days starting Monday as they will host the Plymouth Pilgrims at Goodall Park. You can watch and listen live to all the action on the NECBL Broadcast Network with first pitch set for 6:30 and Sanford Mainers pre-game at 6:20.
