Vermont Mountaineers News Release

SANFORD, ME- A six run second inning proved to be all Sanford would need as they took the victory from Vermont Saturday night, 6-2.

A combination of patience at the plate and timely hitting allowed the Mainers to drive in those six runs off Vermont starter Ross Mintzer (Wyndoor, PA/ Lock Haven). After Tyler Solomon (Haymarket, VA/ Vanderbilt) and Conner Shepherd (Upland, CA/ Texas Christian) drew back to back walks to start the inning, Nick Howie (Oakville, ON/ Eastern Kentucky) then bunted for a single to load the bases. A run was able to score after an error by Vermont, making it 1-0. With two outs, Jake Alu (Hamilton, NJ/ Boston) and John Rizer (Cypress, TX/ Texas Christian) hit back to back doubles, giving Sanford the 6-0 lead.

Mintzer settled down from there, pitching five scoreless innings after. He went seven innings, giving up those six runs (five earned) on seven hits, while walking four and striking out two. He picked up the loss for Vermont, falling to 0-3 on the year.

Vermont was able to get back two in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone) singled to center field. After a flyout, three singles in a row from Straton Podaras (Glen Head, NY/ Radford), Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi), and Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia) drove in two runs, Vermont still trailing 6-2.

The Mainers bullpen would shut down the Vermont offense from there, only allowing only one hit the final three innings. Dean Stramata (Pottsville, PA/ Towson) picked up the win in relief for Sanford, throwing two innings, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out one. Jack Weisenburger (Rockford, MI/ Michigan) threw a scoreless ninth inning, securing Sanford's 9th win of the year.

Vermont (4-11) now sit seven games behind first place Valley (10-3) in the Northern Division. They play their sixth straight game in a row Sunday night, as they host Ocean State (9-5), the first place team in the Southern Division. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 or on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
