Sanford Mainers lose 4-1

The Sanford Mainers dropped their home opener on Thursday, but looked to bounce back against the Plymouth Pilgrims on the road. It was much of the same in this game as the last where pitching and defense were keys to the game, but it was the Pilgrims who came out on top 4-1.
Conor Krauss got the start for the Moose. Despite some first inning struggles, the tall right hander out of Seton Hall University cruised right along, including getting out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning and allowing only one run during his outing.
Matthew Smith took the hill for Plymouth and had the Mainers no-hit through the first 3.2 innings until Jake Thomas came up and hit a towering shot to right to tie the game. That home run eventually became the only run the Mainers would score.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning. Stephen Fortuna came on in relief for Krauss and ran into trouble. He gave up a lead-off walk to Carson Helms who advanced to second on a ground out by Joe Setum. Fortuna was able to get the next hitter looking on strikes, but two outs turned productive for the Pilgrims.
Fortuna recorded his second walk of the inning, this time issued to Scott Donoghue. With runners on first and second, Fortuna gave up a double down the line to left scoring Helms. However, after Helms scored and Donoghue advanced to third, the Mainers ran into miscommunication in which both Fortuna and catcher Cole Martin vacated the plate allowing Donoghue to take off for home to score the Pilgrims third run.
The Pilgrims collected one more run in the inning on another double to put the score at 4-1, which would eventually be the final.
The Mainers had a chance in the top of the ninth to bring the game within one when Nic Wilson hit a blast to straight away centerfield with Anthony Papio on first, but Plymouth's Ryan Stephens caught the ball right at the wall. Papio had to touch second and return back to first, but a strong throw from center doubled him up at first.
The Mainers collected only four hits on the night and drop to 0-2 to start the season. They will have the next two days off, but will return home on Tuesday to face the Saratoga Brigade. Game time is set for 6:30pm and Evan Hill is expected to get the start.
