Keene Swamp Bats News Release

The Swamps Bats home opener against the Mystic Schooners turned sour late into the night as Anthony Turgeon's two run home run in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Schooners over Bats 4-3. Although the Swamp Bats led most of the game behind strong pitching, late inning drama didn't go Keene's way as the Swamp Bats' early season record fell to 0-2.

The Swamp Bats got on the board early in the second inning from a deep solo shot by Steve Swingle. The Bats put another one on the board in the fourth inning after Eric Gutierrez doubled to start the inning, advanced on a groundout, and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Tommy Monnot. The final Swamp Bat run came from another solo home run, this time from Zach Laurincella, who took Schooner pitcher Nick Donatiello deep with two outs in the seventh inning.

The starting pitcher for the Swamp Bats, Tanner Delahoy (1-0), allowed only one hit and one run through six strong innings, struck out seven but walked six Schooners . Delahoy carried a no hitter through 5.2 innings but gave up a single to Joe Rosencrance, which scored the first Mystic run, before striking out Billy Zolga to end the inning.

Wales Toney replaced Delahoy in the seventh inning, who walked three batters and surrendered one run in his 1.2 innings pitched. With Schooners on first and second and two outs, Paul Covelle came into the game and struck out Zolga to preserve the Swamp Bat's 3-2 lead.

Paul Covelle stayed in the game but ran into trouble in the ninth. After recording the first out of the inning, Covelle induced a ground ball from Adam Touhey but the sharp grounder split between the legs of shortstop Dylan Moore for an E6. The error would prove costly as two batters later, with two outs and two strikes, Anthony Turgeon smoked a Covelle fastball over the left field wall for the decisive two run homer.

The Swamp Bats tried rally in the bottom half of the ninth, but their effort fell short. After getting base runners on second and third with only one out, Turgeon fielded a ground ball from Dylan Moore and fired home to get the second out of the inning. Turgeon would then finish off the game as Zach Lauricella grounded out to the shortstop to end the game.

The Swamp Bats will take Sunday off and then travel south to Massachusetts on Monday to face the North Adams Steeplecats at 6:30. They will then return to Alumni Field for three consecutive home games starting on Tuesday.
