North Adams SteepleCats News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Two-time (2010, 11) North Adams SteepleCat and University of Miami outfielder Chantz Mack became the third SteepleCat selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, as the Hurricane was taken in the 29th round (867 overall) by the Seattle Mariners.

Spending the 2010 and 2011 seasons in the Berkshires with the SteepleCats, Mack joins 2012 'Cat Jeff Roy (Rhode Island) and '11 teammate Brian Gilbert (Seton Hall) as former SteepleCats to join the professional ranks in 2013.

In total, North Adams has had 80 former players either selected in the draft or in the professional ranks following the selections of Mack, Roy and Gilbert.

"I am so happy for Chantz," team President Dan Bosley exlaimed. "He led Miami in hitting this year in one of the toughest leagues in all of collegiate baseball, and he is a great all-around player. He spent two summers with us and became a true leader and meant so much to our franchise. He deserves a chance to make it in the Big Leagues and we wish him the best of luck."

The Homestead, Fla., native was one of just two Hurricanes to start all 62 games in 2013, leading the team in several offensive categories throughout the year. The left-handed Mack ranked first in batting average (.302), on-base percentage (.444), hits (61), runs (44), triples (3), walks (41) and stolen bases (15). He recorded 18 multi-hit games, the most of any Hurricane, and served as a catalyst in the lineup as the No. 3 hitter.

In the summer of 2011, Mack ranked second among all starters on the SteepleCats with a .257 average on a team-best 38 hits, totaling five doubles, two triples and 12 RBI. Mack also spent the 2010 campaign in North Adams, helping the SteepleCats post a franchise-best 26-win campaign while advancing to the NECBL Western Division Finals for the first time in team history.
