Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Laredo, TX - Former-Harlingen WhiteWing (7-12) and current Laredo Broncos (11-8) Luany Sanchez hit a grand slam to give the Broncos a 5-3 win tonight at Veterans Field.

Bub Bergstrom, Kevin Griffin and Brian Nichols started the game with three-straight doubles to take a quick 2-0 lead against Sean Donlin (1-0).

That would be it against Donlin, who went six innings, scattering six hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Kenny Evoniuk (0-2) danced in and out of trouble, standing eight base runners in the first four innings, before the Broncos finally broke through in the fifth. Santiago Guerrero was hit by a 1-2 pitch with two outs. Matt Lawman followed with a single and Ivan Reyes came up with the RBI-single to make it 2-1.

The Broncos batted around in the sixth as they scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. Anthony Bennett started off the inning by reaching on an error and Dwayne White followed with a walk to knock out Evoniuk. Todd Lutz came in and Arnolo Ponce reached on an infield single to set-up the grand slam by Sanchez. It was Sanchez's fourth home run of the season, and they have all come in seven games against the WhiteWings.

The WhiteWings got one back without the benefit of a hit in the eighth. With two outs, Nathan Crawdord hit Ryan Fox, walked Argelis Nunez and hit David Fowler. After throwing ball one to Terry Roblez, John Smith came in to complete the walk and bring the WhiteWings within 5-3.

The WhiteWings and Broncos play again tomorrow night at 7:35. Right-hander Alex Gett (3-0) will face Andy Schon (2-0).
