
Former Major Leaguer Mickey Callaway Joins the Laredo Broncos

June 2, 2008-Laredo, TX- The Laredo Broncos of the United League announce that pitcher Mickey Callaway will be the new pitching coach starting today and will be rehabbing with the team to eventually become a player/coach.
Callaway was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 7th round of the 1996 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft. He would be promoted to the Devil Rays in 1999 for his first Major League Baseball action. He pitched in 5 games and started 4 of them going 1-2. He would next see action in 2000 when he played in 2 games.
In December of 2001 Callaway was traded to the then Anaheim Angels and he would end up helping the Angels win the 2002 World Series. He made 7 starts that season going 2-1 with a 4.19 era for the Angels. Callaway would also play with the Angels in 2003 before being released during the season. He would then sign with the Texas Rangers and play for the Major League club for parts of the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Overall, Callaway would play 5 seasons in his major league career.
Mickey Callaway was the head baseball coach at Texas A&M International University for the 2008 season. He is currently rehabbing with the team from Tommy John Surgery and will act as the Broncos pitching coach. Callaway is currently schedule to be activated in about a month when he will act as a player/coach.
"It is a tremendous asset to get Mickey in as a pitching coach and eventually into a player. He will help our young pitchers and eventually strengthen our starting rotation down the line. I couldn't ask for anything more." General Manager Jose Melendez mentioned.
Callaway joins a coaching staff that includes hitting coach/third base coach Jon Hinkel and Field Manager Dan Shwam. Callaway spent the last three season playing overseas in Korea and Japan.
The Laredo Broncos finished their second season in 2007. The Broncos will play a 90 game season from May to September with 46 home games at Veterans Field.
