Broncos Win Nail-Biter Over Harlingen

Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos escaped with a 5-3 victory over the Harlingen White Wings on Monday Night at Veterans Field. The Broncos continue on this 6 game home stand on Tuesday Night with the middle game of a 3 game series against the Harlingen WhiteWings. For more information you can call (956)-723-BASE (2273).

The WhiteWings got on the board first in the game in the bottom of the 1st inning. Bub Bergstrom led off the game with a double and then scored on a double by Kevin Griffin. The next batter Brian Nichols would also double scoring Griffin to give them an early 2-0 lead.

Broncos starter Sean Donlin would settle down after that first inning keeping the Broncos in the game. Laredo would get on the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom of the 5th inning. With 2 outs Santiago Guerrero was hit by a pitch. Then Matt Lawman would single advancing Guerrero to 2nd base. Ivan Reyes would follow with a single scoring Guerrero. That would make the score 2-1 WhiteWings after 5 innings.

Laredo would strike again in the bottom of the 6th inning. Anthony Bennett led off reaching base on an error by shortstop Amadeo Zazueta. Dwayne White would then walk to chase Harlingen's starter Kenny Evoniuk. Todd Lutz would come in and give up an infield single to Arnoldo Ponce. With the bases loaded Luany Sanchez would unload them with a grand slam home run his 4th bomb of the season. The Broncos would load the bases again in the inning but Eric Padilla hit into a double play to end the threat, but the Broncos had the lead 5-2.

Sean Donlin would leave the game after 6 innings with a chance to win the game. Donlin would give up 2 runs on 6 hits. He walked only 1 and struck out 8 batters.

Julian Williams would come in for the Broncos and pitch an easy 7th inning. Nathan Crawford would then come into the game in the 8th inning and retired the first two men he faced. Crawford would then hit Ryan Fox, walk Argelis Nunez, and hit David Fowler. He would throw one more pitch which was a ball to David Fowler before being replaced by John Smith. Smith would then walk Terry Roblez to force in a run. Smith would then get Amadeo Zazueta to fly out to end the inning making the score 5-3 Laredo.

Smith would make it interesting in the 9th inning. He would put runners on 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out. But, he would get Brian Nichols and Ryan Fox to strike out looking to give the Broncos a 5-3 victory.

The Broncos had 5 runs on 11 hits and 1 error, while the WhiteWings had 3 runs on 8 hits and 1 error.

The Broncos improve their record to 11-8 on the young season. The Broncos will be back in action on Tuesday night at Veterans Field for game 2 of a 3 game set against the Harlingen WhiteWings at 7:30. It is Tecate 2 for Tuesday at the ballpark.
