Winston-Salem Dash News Release

KINSTON, NC (JULY 21, 2010) - The Dash did not respond well to Wednesday's early wake-up call, losing 5-1 to the Kinston Indians at Grainger Stadium in a game that started at 11 a.m. Karexon Sanchez led the K-Tribe with a 3 for 5 day at the plate, finishing a triple short of the cycle as the Indians took the rubber-game of the series.

Kinston (10-14, 46-48) scored first with a run in the first inning against Dash starter Dylan Axelrod. Sanchez doubled with one out and scored two batters later on Chun Chen's RBI single to make it 1-0 Indians.

Axelrod (5-2) gave up three straight hits to start the second inning. Doug Pickens' base hit scored Juan Diaz from second and the K-Tribe doubled its lead. Kinston added one more on Sanchez' RBI single to put the Indians ahead 3-0.

After both teams were held scoreless in the third, Sanchez pulled a solo home run to right, leaving him a triple shy of the cycle in his first three at bats. The K-Tribe pounded out three more hits to lead off the fifth inning against Axelrod, the last one scoring Chen to push Kinston's lead to 5-0.

Winston-Salem (13-12, 56-39) was unable to produce against hard-throwing Austin Adams (2-0). He allowed two hits over five shutout innings and was replaced by Marty Popham to start the sixth.

Popham threw two scoreless innings before yielding an unearned run in the eighth. Jon Gilmore reached on a throwing error by Ronald Rivas and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Seth Loman brought him home with a base hit to right, as the Dash avoided what would have been its second shutout loss of the road trip.

Popham gave up a leadoff single in the ninth before retiring the final three batters on pop-ups to end the game. He was credited with his third save, throwing four innings for the K-Tribe.

Adams earned his second win while Axelrod suffered his second defeat. Winston's starter allowed five runs on 12 hits in 4.1 innings.
