Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Sloppy vs. Joe: Unfortunately for the Dash, Winston-Salem cannot blame the wet weather that arrived late in yesterday's contest for its early-inning errors. Winston committed a season-high-tying four errors, leading to three unearned runs and Kinston overcame two early deficits to win 4-2 in a rain-shortened game. The Dash held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the K-Tribe quickly overcame those holes and grabbed the lead for good in the fourth inning. Joe Gardner gave up one earned run and quieted down the Dash bats after the first inning to pick up the win. A sudden thunderstorm that coincided with the beginning of the eighth inning forced a 44-minute delay and the game was called, as the field was deemed unplayable and storms were still present in the area. The seven-inning victory for the Indians tied the series at one-game apiece, making this morning's contest a rubber-game. Winston-Salem has dropped five consecutive road rubber-games since winning its first such contest this season.
E! True Kinston Story: There will not be any TV specials about the defense played by either team last night. Winston and Kinston committed a combined six errors in seven innings last night, with the Dash (4) committing the lion's share. Drew Garcia, Mike Richard, and Jon Gilmore each had throwing errors, while Terry Doyle erred on a pickoff attempt at first base. The errors committed by Garcia, Gilmore, and Doyle were responsible for the three unearned runs that scored while Doyle was in the game. On the other side, Juan Diaz and Karexon Sanchez each had fielding errors for Kinston, but neither led to any Dash runs. Winston-Salem scored an unearned run in the third inning thanks to a passed ball by catcher Richard Martinez.
Ye"SH" Men: Kyle Shelton and Brandon Short have emerged as the Dash's hottest hitters lately. In the last five games, they are hitting a combined .513 (20 for 39) with a home run, four doubles, 12 RBI, and ten runs scored. Shelton is 10 for 18 (.556) with five runs scored since last Thursday, while Short is 10 for 21 (.476) with a homer, nine RBI, and five runs in that stretch.
Jonny Walker: Jon Gilmore walked three times in Monday night's game in addition to hitting an RBI double in the third inning. The three walks were a career-high for a player that is often averse to taking pitches. Monday was just the second time this season Gilmore has had a multi-walk game and it was the fourth of his four-year professional career (359 games).
No Average Group: The Dash's season batting average of .295 is the fourth-best of any team in professional affiliated baseball. The AAA Las Vegas 51s (.301), AAA Albuquerque Isotopes (.300), and Advanced-A High Desert Mavericks (.300) are the only teams with higher averages. Winston-Salem's batting average is arguably the most impressive of any minor league squad. The Dash's average is 38 points higher than the Carolina League average, the biggest difference between any one team's batting average and the average of its respective league. Las Vegas' is 27 points higher than the Pacific Coast League average and High Desert's is 23 points higher than the California League average. Winston's average is the best in the Carolina League by 31 points (Frederick is the closest with a .264 average). Winston has four players in the top ten in the league in batting average: Jon Gilmore (2nd, .332), Brandon Short (3rd, .319), Ozzie Lewis (5th, .312), and the recently promoted Justin Greene (6th, .309).
Hit Me Baby, One More Time: Seth Loman is now one away from tying the Carolina League record for most times being hit by a pitch in one season. Loman has been hit 23 times this season. Former Winston-Salem Spirit Rusty Crockett was hit by 24 pitches in 1989. If Loman stays in the Carolina League all season and keeps up his current pace, he would demolish the record by getting hit by a pitch 33 times.
Today's Opposing Starter: RHP Austin Adams (1-0, 1.62) makes his fourth start for the K-Tribe and his first against the Dash. He has been impressive in the Carolina League, striking out 21 batters in 16.2 innings holding opponents to a .222 batting average. Left-handed hitters are a miserable 2 for 31 (.065) against him. Adams started the season with low-A Lake County, making 13 appearances (eight starts). He went 2-4 with one save and a 3.54 ERA for the Captains, posting a .206 batting average against 61 strikeouts in 53.1 innings. A fifth round draft pick last year, Adams first pitched professionally for Mahoning Valley, going 3-1 with a 4.86 ERA in 17 relief appearances. Adams was drafted out of Faulkner University (AL), where he played four years as both a pitcher and a shortstop. Baseball America noted that he featured the "Best Fastball" of Cleveland's 2009 draftees, with a heater that sits 95-97, occasionally topping out at 98 mph. The same publication also tabbed him the "Best Athlete" of the team's draft class. The Brewers selected him as a shortstop in the 27th round in 2008, but Adams elected to return to school, where he transitioned from the bullpen to the starting rotation to develop his repertoire. In his senior season with the Eagles, Adams went 5-2 with 42 strikeouts and a 5.83 ERA. He was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American for his performance at the plate, hitting .389 with 14 home runs, 12 doubles, and 51 RBI. As a junior, he was used as Faulkner's closer, notching 12 saves to lead the nation.
