San Jose's Nelson named offensive player of the week

SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 30, 2006) - San Jose SaberCats offensive specialist BEN NELSON, who set team postseason game records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches in an American Conference semifinal win over Arizona on May 27, was today named the Arena Football League's Offensive Player of the Week for the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Nelson, the 2006 AFL Rookie of the Year, posted 12 receptions for 202 yards and caught six touchdowns leading the SaberCats to their eighth straight win overall, 62-48. He also matched a team and league playoff game record for total touchdowns scored and posted the third-most receiving yards in an AFL playoff game.

The St. Cloud (Minn.) State product ended the 2006 regular season playing in 12 games with 94 catches for 1,405 yards averaging 117.1 yards per game and topped all AFL rookies with 26 touchdown catches.

The award marks the second time Nelson has been named Offensive Player of the Week this season and is the fifth weekly honor for a SaberCat this year. WR/DB Charles Pauley in Week 3 (ironman), Nelson in Week 10 (offensive), DS Clevan Thomas in Week 12 (defensive) and QB Mark Grieb in Week 16 (offensive) are San Jose's other weekly award winners.

The SaberCats continue their drive to ArenaBowl XX Las Vegas when they host the Chicago Rush in the American Conference Championship game at 12:00 p.m. (PT) on Saturday, June 3.
