Destroyers' Jerald Brown named Defensive Player of the Year

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Arena Football League today announced that Columbus Destroyers' defensive specialist Jerald Brown has been named the League's ADT Defensive Player of the Year as voted by AFL head coaches, players, fans and the Arena Football League Writers Association. The announcement was made live on ESPNews Tuesday afternoon. Brown becomes the first Destroyers player in franchise history to earn a yearly award.
Brown (5-11, 185, Glenville State) finished the season ranked second in the AFL in interceptions (11), third in interception return yards (133) and fifth in passes defended (25). His interception totals also established new Destroyers franchise records. He added 65.0 tackles (54UT-22AT) and two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned 40 yards for a touchdown. Brown also returned one interception for a touchdown as he helped the Columbus defense rank second in the AFL, allowing an average of 44.8 points per game.
This is the third League honor Brown has received this season. He was named First Team All-Arena two weeks ago and was the AFL's Defensive Player of the Month for March. Other nominees for the ADT Defensive Player of the Year Award were Philadelphia's Eddie Moten, Colorado's Rashad Floyd, Dallas' Jermaine Jones and Austin's Damon Mason.
A two-time First Team all-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection at Glenville State, Brown began his AFL career in 2004 with the New York Dragons. He then played one season for the Arizona Rattlers in 2005 prior to joining the Destroyers this year. In his career, Brown has registered 88.0 tackles (75UT-26AT), 13 interceptions, 16 pass breakups and recovered four fumbles in 26 games.
