LAST SERIES MEETING: Chicago 54, SaberCats 48 (ot) - Sunday, February 26, 2006 - Allstate Arena - Matt D'Orazio tossed a 27-yard TD pass to Cornelius White in overtime giving the Chicago Rush a 54-48 win over the SaberCats. Chicago DB Jeremy Unertl's second INT of the game came on San Jose's first OT possession setting the stage for the Rush to complete the comeback win. It was the fifth overtime game in SaberCats history and the first since June 30, 2001. The loss also dropped San Jose to a franchise worst 1-4 on the year. Mark Grieb connected with James Roe on a 46-yard scoring play midway through the third quarter to stake San Jose to a 40-28 lead. Grieb completed 17 of 28 pass attempts for 242 yards with five TDs on the game, but his two interceptions to Unertl led to a pair of Chicago scores. Grieb tossed three picks for the game, all in the second half. Chicago's C.J. Johnson returned a missed Brian Schmitz field goal attempt 56 yards for a touchdown with 9:41 left in the fourth quarter to give the Rush its first lead of the game at 41-40. Roe's third scoring catch of the game and a 2-point conversion gave San Jose a 7-point lead with under four minutes left in the contest, but Chicago forced overtime when D'Orazio connected with Buchie Ibeh on a 12-yard TD pass with just 11 seconds remaining. San Jose had one last chance in regulation but Grieb was sacked by Khreem Smith on the San Jose 1-yard line ending regulation. The SaberCats jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead following a 1-yard Calvin Schexnayder run after a net recovery by Phil Glover on the
opening kickoff. San Jose held Chicago on downs on its first possession and Grieb connected with Roe from 24-yards out for a 13-0 lead six and a half minutes into the game. Chicago's Bob McMillen became the AFL's career rushing leader, briefly. He ran for a yard in the third quarter to overtake Les Barley, but on his next carry, McMillen was thrown for an 8-yard loss, moving him behind Barley once again.

THE COACHES:
San Jose - Darren Arbet, 8th season
93-41 (.694) overall; 10-4 (.714) postseason
4-2 (.667) career vs. Chicago
5-2 (.714) career vs. Mike Hohensee
Finishing up his eighth season at the helm of the SaberCats, two-time Coach of the Year Darren Arbet moved into sole possession of 5th place on the AFL's all-time wins list surpassing Perry Moss when San Jose defeated Tampa Bay on Apr. 7 for his 87th career victory. At Los Angeles on Apr. 29, Arbet posted his 90th victory in just his 131st career game and guided the SaberCats to their seventh consecutive winning season and playoff appearance. Under Arbet the SaberCats have posted six double-digit regular season win totals six times and since the start of the 2000 campaign his teams have compiled a 77-29 (.726) regular season record and have set league records for most regular season wins (13 - 2002), most wins in a season (16- 2002), most consecutive wins in a regular season (12 - 2002), most wins to end a season (11 - 2000) and the longest regular season win streak (15 - 2000-01). Last season Arbet became the second fastest head coach to reach 80 career wins, doing it in 111 games. Only Tampa Bay's Tim Marcum, who reached the 80-win mark in 96 games, got to that milestone quicker.

Chicago - Mike Hohensee, 13th season
104-94 (.525) overall; 9-9 (.500) postseason
2-8 (.200) career vs. San Jose
2-5 (.286) career vs. Darren Arbet
Chicago head coach Mike Hohensee became just the third coach in AFL history to accumulate 100 career wins with a 67-47 win over Las Vegas on Apr. 23 joining Tampa Bay's Tim Marcum and Utah's Danny White. The only head coach in Rush history, Hohensee has guided Chicago to a 57-46 overall record and playoff appearances in each of the team's six seasons. During his tenure, the Rush has won two Central Division titles (2002, 2004) and advanced to the AFL semifinals four times (2002, 04, 05, 06). One of only four men to be involved in the Arena Football League in each of the 20 seasons, Hohensee has taken his teams to the playoffs 10 times and won five division titles in his 13 seasons as a head coach. Earlier this season, the Rush extended Hohensee's contract through the 2009 season.
JUST WIN BABY! - SaberCats' head coach Darren Arbet posted his 10th career playoff win when his team defeated Arizona, 62-48, on May 27. Arbet became the 4th coach in league history to reach the 10-playoff win mark and was joined by Orlando's Jay Gruden a day later when the Predators knocked off the Philadelphia Soul on May 28. Arbet, Gruden and Tampa Bay's Tim Marcum all hold the highest winning percentage in postseason history among coaches with at least two playoff trips with a mark of .714. Chicago's Mike Hohensee has won two playoff games this season, the first time in his 10 postseason trips that his team has won more than one playoff game, raising his career playoff ledger to 9-9.

2006 SEASON REVIEW
It's not how you start; it's how you finish, as the saying goes. For the 2006 SaberCats that couldn't have been truer. Sitting at 3-6 and tied for the worst record in the American Conference after nine weeks of play, the SaberCats did the unimaginable. They ran the table, won the Western Division title for the sixth time in franchise history and first since 2003, and ended with the second-best record in the Conference and a 7th consecutive playoff berth. Entering the season with high expectations, the SaberCats saw those dashed with a home opening loss to the expansion Utah Blaze. Not only did San Jose lose its home opener for the first time since 1998, also lost was James Roe, who sustained a concussion on the team's first offensive drive after catching a scoring pass. OS Rodney Wright also injured his toe and left the game early in the first quarter leaving San Jose short-handed in its 48-35 loss. The SaberCats then embarked on a record five-game road trip. They lost at Las Vegas on Feb. 6, dropping to 0-2 for the first time since Darren Arbet became head coach. San Jose got its first win of the year at division rival Arizona in Week 3, but consecutive defeats at Grand Rapids and in overtime at Chicago saw the team floundering with a 1-4 record, its worst five-game start in franchise history. The road trip ended and the bleeding stopped - temporarily - with a win at Utah in Week 6 and the SaberCats returned home to play seven of their last 10 games in HP Pavilion. San Jose suffered a 75-61 loss to Los Angeles at home in Week 7, but a talented rookie emerged to supply a dynamic option to QB Mark Grieb and the team's struggling offense. Ben Nelson, in just his 2nd AFL start, had 11 catches for 168 yards and a pair of scores, and teamed with James Roe, who returned to the lineup in Week 4, to provide a potent receiving duo. Also in that game the legendary Barry Wagner passed Hunkie Cooper as the league's career leader in all-purpose yardage, adding yet another record to his resume. Playing in his first game of the year, Wagner totaled 200 yards on kickoff returns surpassing both Cooper and George LaFrance on the AFL's all-time list. Staring a 2-6 record straight in the face, the SaberCats dug deep in a Week 8 win over Georgia. Mark Grieb and James Roe hooked up on a scoring pass and 2-point conversion with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game to forge a 49-all tie and force OT. San Jose denied Georgia on its 2-point conversion when the Force went for the win after pulling within a point in the extra session. The momentum of a thrilling OT win a week earlier would not carry over and the SaberCats dropped a 51-48 decision at Nashville in Week 9 to drop to 3-6. The streak began with another win over Arizona in Week 10. Grieb threw for 361 yards and tied a team game record with nine TD passes in a 61-49 win. Despite their 4-6 record the SaberCats trailed the division-leading Rattlers by just one game after the win. A trip to Tampa saw the SaberCats win consecutive games for the first time all season and they did it without the help of a TD pass. San Jose tied a league and team record by scoring six rushing TDs and DS Omarr Smith supplied the go-ahead points by returning an interception 16-yards for a score late in the fourth quarter in a 52-43 win. For the first time in his career as San Jose's starting QB, Mark Grieb did not throw a scoring pass. San Jose reached the .500 mark in a 69-59 Week 12 win over Las Vegas. Grieb threw for 388 yards and eight TDs, but it was another fourth quarter defensive score that proved noteworthy. Lineman Rex Richards recovered a fumble in the endzone following a sack by Joe Jacobs, and San Jose had a 10-point lead that the Gladiators could not overcome. The 3-game win streak appeared to be in jeopardy against Austin in Week 13. In the first ever meeting between the teams, the Wranglers built a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and led by 22 points twice during the first half. The SaberCats would overcome the deficit to post the largest come-from-behind win in a regulation game in team history. A key fourth quarter special teams play helped in the rally. Following a TD that cut the deficit to 3 points, Barry Wagner stripped the ball from Sedrick Robinson, who had already returned two kickoffs for scores, on the kickoff and Wes Stephens recovered in the endzone giving San Jose its first lead of the game. It took Grieb's 500th career TD pass, however, to pull out the win. His 5-yard strike to Roe in the corner of the endzone with 17 seconds left lifted San Jose to its 4th straight win. After a 53-36 win in Los Angeles that saw Arbet post his 90th career victory, the SaberCats faced the defending ArenaBowl champion Colorado Crush in a Week 15 battle. Two touchdowns in the final 30 seconds of the first half propelled the SaberCats to a 61-56 win. Charles Pauley went 57-yards for the team's first kickoff return TD of the year with 37 seconds left and Omarr Smith returned an interception 42 yards with no time left to give San Jose a lead it would not relinquish. Despite 371 passing yards from former SaberCat John Dutton, San Jose was able to pull out the victory in a contest that featured the past two ArenaBowl champions. San Jose concluded the season with yet another dramatic victory. Columbus built a 41-26 lead late in the first half, but the SaberCats used a 35-3 second half scoring run to win their 7th straight game and deny the Destroyers a playoff berth. Grieb broke his own league record for passing yards in a season throwing for 302 in the game giving him 4,841 on the year breaking his 2005 record of 4,796. Grieb also led the AFL with eight 300-yard passing games and the SaberCats amassed a league record 5,066 yards of total offense on the year, the first team in AFL history to eclipse the 5,000 level. FB/LB Phil Glover set a team record with 55 rush attempts and led the league with 15 rush TDs. He also placed sixth in the AFL with 156 yards. The team's receiving duo of Roe and Nelson each matched the team record with seven 100-yard receiving games and Nelson became the second rookie in league history to record over 1,400 yards, falling six yards shy of the rookie record with a season total of 1,405. San Jose's remarkable run also gave the team double-digit regular season win totals in six of the last seven seasons.

STREAKS - San Jose's current run of seven straight postseason appearances is the second-longest active streak in the AFL. The Orlando Predators own the longest streak at 15 straight seasons. Tampa Bay had its streak of 15 consecutive playoff trips snapped this season. The Chicago Rush is right behind the SaberCats, appearing in a sixth straight postseason.

PLAYOFF WINS - San Jose's 62-48 win over Arizona in a Conference semifinal game on May 27 gave the team 10 all-time postseason wins, becoming the 5th franchise in AFL history with double-digit playoff victories. Arizona and Orlando, each with 21, are the all-time leaders.

EVEN AS YOU GO - For anyone interested in numerology, the SaberCats might be a good bet to win the ArenaBowl title in 2006. San Jose has dominated even numbered years winning league titles in 2002 and 2004. San Jose went 12-2 in 2000 but fell one game short of reaching the ArenaBowl that year. This season the SaberCats won the Western Division and thanks to a season-ending seven-game win streak, posted the 2nd best record in the American Conference at 10-6. Over those four seasons the SaberCats have gone 54-15 (.783).

SEMIS - With their win over Arizona last week, the SaberCats advanced to the league's semifinal round for the sixth time in franchise history. San Jose had made five straight trips to the semis from 2000 to 2004 but had its streak snapped last season. The SaberCats are 2-3 in semifinal round games with their last win coming in their last appearance, a 49-35 defeat of Chicago on June 12, 2004. San Jose also defeated Orlando in 2002 and fell to Nashville in both 2000 and 2001 and Arizona in 2003. All but one semifinal round game has been played in San Jose, the one was on Aug. 11, 2001 when San Jose dropped a 71-47 decision at Nashville.

BYE, BYE - A return to a 12-team playoff field in 2006 also brought a first-round bye back to the four division winners. The AFL expanded its postseason field from 8 to 12 teams in 2000 through the 2003 seasons and the SaberCats were the only team during those four years to earn a week off during the opening round. The league returned to an 8-team format in 2004 and 2005, but San Jose continued the trend this season by winning the West and getting a first-round bye.

PLAYOFF TESTED - Of the players on San Jose's 2006 roster (active and IR) who have played in a game this season, 13 were members of the 2004 ArenaBowl championship team and 11 were with the team in its 2002 championship run. The players include Barry Wagner, Clevan Thomas, James Roe, Omarr Smith, Joe Jacobs, Frank Beede, Albrey Battle, Chuck Reed, Mark Grieb and Dan Loney. George Williams, who was lost with a season-ending knee injury in Week 7, was also on the 2002 club. Two players, Battle and Wagner, have played in all 14 postseason games since the 2000 season.

LORDS OF THE RINGS - The 24 players on San Jose's current playoff roster have combined to win 28 ArenaBowl titles with Barry Wagner, Omarr Smith, Calvin Schexnayder and Joe Jacobs each claiming three. Jacobs won a title with Albany in 1999, Smith with Tampa Bay in 2003 and Wagner with Orlando in 1998 as well as both San Jose titles (2002 and 2004). Schexnayder won two titles while with Arizona (1994 and 1997) and was a member of the 2004 San Jose squad.

PLAYOFFS OR BUST - Completing his 15th season in the 20-year-old AFL, WR/DB Barry Wagner has never missed competing in the playoffs. Wagner made eight postseason trips with Orlando from 1992-1999 and joined the SaberCats in 2000, just in time for their current seven-season playoff appearance streak. Wagner has played in seven ArenaBowls, five with Orlando and two with San Jose, winning championships in 1998, 2002 and 2004.

THE MOST - Both Barry Wagner and Albrey Battle played in their 14th career playoff game as members of the SaberCats in the teams win over Arizona on May 27, tying former teammate and the AFL's all-time sacks leader Sam Hernandez for most in team history. Battle and Wagner have played in every San Jose playoff game since the 2000 season.

TRENDS:
HOME COOKIN - The SaberCats ended the 2006 regular season by winning six straight games at HP Pavilion and opened the playoffs with a 62-48 win over Arizona giving them seven straight home wins. Since Darren Arbet became the team's head coach in 1999 San Jose has posted an impressive 58-13 (.817) record in all home games and is 9-2 (.818) in playoff contests.
THAT 60's SHOW - San Jose reached the 60-point mark seven times during the 2006 regular season, including the final two games and four of the last five. San Jose went 6-1 during the regular year when scoring 60-or-more points and owns a 49-7 (.875) all-time regular season record when hitting the 60-mark. The SaberCats topped the barrier in their first playoff game with a 62-48 win over Arizona on May 27, giving them a perfect 5-0 mark when reaching the 60-point plateau in a postseason contest.

ALTO! - San Jose's defense registered five stops against the Rattlers on May 27 to help the team to a 62-48 playoff win. The SaberCats used a missed field goal, interception and turnover on downs on consecutive Arizona possessions to go on a 28-0 scoring run turning a 20-7 deficit into a 35-20 lead just before halftime. The SaberCats scored four TDs off the first four stops. Over their season-ending 7-game win streak the unit totaled 32 full stops and averaged just over 4.5 stops per game.

WE MEET AGAIN - The SaberCats and Rush will be meeting for the second time this season and sixth all-time when the teams collide in the American Conference Championship game on Saturday. Chicago's 54-48 overtime win back on Feb. 26 dropped San Jose to 1-4 on the year while the Rush improved to 3-2. Following that game the SaberCats went 9-2 over the final 11 regular season games while Chicago posted just a 4-7 mark. San Jose enters the contest having won its last 8 games while the Rush have posted a pair of playoff wins and four straight victories overall.

PAYDIRT - During the course of the 2006 regular season, Mark Grieb ran for a total of 3 yards and did not score a TD. He bested those totals on one scamper against the Rattlers on May 27. Grieb maneuvered his way into the endzone from the Rattlers 5-yard line, dodging a defender along the way, for his 3rd career postseason rushing TD. His last playoff rush attempt came against the Rush and resulted in a 7-yard TD on June 12, 2004.

STREAKING - Entering the playoffs on an extended winning streak has not necessarily been a good thing for San Jose. The SaberCats entered the 2000 playoffs riding an 11-game win streak before being bounced by Nashville in the second round. In 2003 the SaberCats were on a 5-game streak entering the postseason before Arizona knocked them out, again in the 2nd round. In San Jose's first championship season of 2002, the team split its final two regular season games and in 2004 lost three of their last four regular season games before winning three straight in the playoffs.

NOTES:
TITLE TOWN - San Jose clinched its 6th Western Division title and first since 2003, with a 61-56 win over Colorado on May 6. The SaberCats have won the most division titles of any team since the AFL went to a 4-division format in 1995. Arizona, Tampa Bay and Albany each have five division championships to their credit. Dallas won the East this season becoming the second team to win a title in two different divisions. The Desperados won the Central in 2003. Nashville (East-1997; South-2001) is the other team to claim different division titles. The league's tie-break format was used to determine a champion in case of a first place tie.

FULL NELSON - 2006 Rookie of the Year Ben Nelson showed no signs of jitters in his 1st career AFL postseason game. All he did was break team playoff records for receptions, receiving yards and TD receptions while tying a mark for overall TDs scored. Nelson hauled in 12 balls for 202 yards and 6 scores, tying an AFL record for TDs and amassing the third-most receiving yards in an AFL postseason game. James Hundon established the team playoff record for catches (11) and yards (184) against Georgia on May 31, 2003, while James Roe had five TD grabs against Arizona on June 27, 2004 in ArenaBowl XVIII. During the regular season Nelson fell six yards shy of breaking the league's rookie record for receiving yards, which was set by Austin's Derrick Lewis. Lewis ended the regular year with 1,411 yards while Nelson had 1,405. Lewis started all 16 games for the Wranglers while Nelson started the final 11 games for San Jose. Nelson's average of 127.7 yards per game in his 11 starts would rank as tops in the league. Nelson also matched a team record with seven 100-yard receiving games during the campaign.

GETTING OFFENSIVE - After setting an AFL record with 5,066 yards of total offense during the 2006 season and cracking the 300-mark a team record 11 times, the SaberCats resumed their offensive assault in a 62-48 win over Arizona in their first playoff game on May 27. San Jose amassed 327 yards against the Rattlers and averaged 343 yards a game in three meetings with their division rivals. It was a different story against the Rush back on Feb. 26 when the teams met. San Jose managed just 239 yards of offense, its second-lowest total of the year, and dropped a 54-48 decision in overtime. The SaberCats posted their lowest offensive output in the season opener when they managed just 228 yards in a loss to the Utah Blaze.

ON THE MARK - Mark Grieb continued his torrid passing pace for the year by throwing for 320 yards and a team playoff record tying 8 TDs in the SaberCats 62-48 win over Arizona on May 27. Grieb completed 24-of-34 passes and ran for another score to account for all 9 of the team's TDs. He tied his own team record for pass TDs in a playoff game, which was set originally against Arizona on Aug. 4, 2001 and matched on June 27, 2004 in ArenaBowl XVIII also against Arizona. Including the regular season, Grieb has now passed for 5,161 yards in 2006, an average of 303.6 ypg and had nine 300-yard games. Grieb is also 2nd all-time in career playoff touchdown passes with 65 behind only Arizona's Sherdrick Bonner who increased his total to 127 with six scoring strikes against San Jose. Grieb threw for 4,841 yards during the regular season, breaking his 2005 record total of 4,796, and has seen his season passing yardage total increase every year since 2001. He holds the top two single-season records in AFL history and over the past four seasons has been the most prolific passer in the AFL throwing for 652 more yards than Clint Dolezel, the next closest QB on the list.

ROE-LIFIC - Already the SaberCats career leader in every receiving category, WR/LB James Roe is nearing the same status in postseason games. Roe tallied 7 receptions for 74 yards in San Jose's 62-48 playoff win over Arizona on May 27 and is inching closer to James Hundon's all-time playoff records. Roe caught 113 passes during the regular year, the 3rd highest single-season total in team history and good for 10th place in the AFL. He did this despite missing nearly three full games at the beginning of the year after sustaining a concussion on the team's first offensive series against Utah in the season opener. Roe set a team season record with five double-digit reception games and matched a record with seven 100-yard receiving games. He now has 533 career catches and owns the top three season marks in franchise history.

PICKIN IT - DS Omarr Smith became the SaberCats' all-time leader in playoff interceptions when he snared a deflected pass against the Rattlers on May 27. Smith should give credit to rookie Marquis Floyd, who batted the ball out of the grasp of Arizona receiver Cosmo DeMatteo as the two were racing into the corner of the endzone. The ball squirted into the air and Smith was anxiously waiting to return the pigskin the other direction. It was the 3rd playoff INT for Smith as a member of the SaberCats and his 5th overall. He tallied two while winning an ArenaBowl title with Tampa Bay in 2003. Smith broke a tie with Bret Cooper, Barry Wagner and Clevan Thomas with his 3rd career postseason INT off Arizona's Sherdrick Bonner.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS - The last time the SaberCats and Rush played back on Feb. 26, each team was playing without one its top receivers. San Jose's Ben Nelson, who had a team-high 1,405 receiving yards and 26 TDs on 94 receptions, joined the starting lineup a week after the Rush game taking over for Calvin Schexnayder, who sustained an ankle injury against Chicago. Bobby Sippio joined the Rush for the final games of the season after being let go by Tampa Bay and ended the season with a team-best 17 TD catches and 654 yards on just 38 receptions.

AGAINST THE RUSH - Mark Grieb has started all six games against Chicago posting four wins, including a semifinal playoff victory in 2004 to lead San Jose to ArenaBowl XVIII. Grieb has completed 126-of-191 attempts (66%) for 1,709 yards and 31 TDs with 5 INTs. Three of his INTs came when the teams last played on Feb. 26, a 54-48 Chicago overtime victory...WR/LB James Roe has also played in all six games with 41 receptions for 543 yards and 8 TDs with 9.0 tackles and an INT.

CHICAGO PLAYERS TO WATCH:
FB/LB BOB MCMILLEN - The AFL's career rushing leader and former SaberCat has seen action in 5 playoff games with San Jose and has played in 1 playoff game against his old team as a member of the Chicago Rush in 2004. In addition to winning two ArenaBowl titles (1997-Arizona, 2002-San Jose), he is the first player in AFL history to rush for 100 or more yards in seven-consecutive seasons. As a member of the Arizona Rattlers for the first six years of his career, McMillen played against San Jose nine times running for 81 yards and 4 TDs on 33 carries. In his four games in a Rush uniform against the SaberCats, McMillen has just 9 rush yards on 14 carries and 4.5 tackles. In his only playoff game against the SaberCats on June 12, 2004 he rushed one time for a yard in Chicago's 35-49 loss.

OS BOBBY SIPPIO - Spent the first nine weeks of the 2006 season with the Tampa Bay Storm before joining the Rush. Sippio has seen action in 2 games against the SaberCats as a member of the Dallas Desperados in 2004-2005. In those games he caught 9 passes for 125 yards with 4 TDs and added 5.5 total tackles on defense. His best game was on April 10, 2004 when he had 7 catches for 100 yards with 4 TDs earning Offensive Player of the Game honors in the Desperados 58-54 victory. Sippio has never faced San Jose in a playoff game in his career.

QB MATT D'ORAZIO - The former Buffalo/Columbus Destroyer has taken over as Chicago's starting QB. During the 2006 regular season D'Orazio played in 15 games completing 305-of-443 for 3,546 yards with 63 TDs and only 5 INTs. He also finished the regular season as the team's leading rusher with 162 yards and 10 TDs on 56 carries. In his first ever game against San Jose, he threw for a season-high 351 yards on 29-of-39 passing with 7 TDs leading the Rush to a 54-48 overtime win. D'Orazio has completed 41-of-63 for 523 yards with 9 TDs and 1 INT in Chicago's two playoff victories this season.
