Roe added scoring grabs of 8, 15, 4 and 3 yards and totaled 9 catches for 81 yards. He added an interception late in the game to secure Ironman honors. Grieb threw all his scoring passes to Roe and ended the game 21-of-28 for 187 yards. THE COACHES:
San Jose - Darren Arbet, 8th season
82-37 (.689) reg. season; 91-41 (.689) overall
5-0 (1.000) career vs. Destroyers (0-0 vs Columbus)
0-0 career vs. Doug Kay
Now in his eighth season at the helm of the SaberCats, two-time Coach of the Year Darren Arbet moved into sole possession of 5th place on the AFL's all-time wins list surpassing Perry Moss when San Jose defeated Tampa Bay on Apr. 7 for his 87th career victory. At Los Angeles on Apr. 29, Arbet posted his 90th career victory in just his 131st career game and qualified for the playoffs for a seventh consecutive season. Since the start of the 2000 campaign his teams have compiled a 76-29 (.724) regular season record and have set league records for most regular season wins (13 - 2002), most wins in a season (16- 2002), most consecutive wins in a regular season (12 - 2002), most wins to end a season (11 - 2000) and the longest regular season win streak (15 - 2000-01). Last season Arbet became the second fastest head coach to reach 80 career wins, doing it in 111 games. Only Tampa Bay's Tim Marcum, who reached the 80-win mark in 96 games, got to that milestone quicker.
Columbus - Doug Kay, 4th season (1st w/Columbus)
23-32 (.418) reg. season and overall
0-2 (.000) career vs. San Jose
0-0 career vs. Darren Arbet
The Destroyers hired Doug Kay as their head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season with Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay also has coached the Charlotte Rage (1995) and the Carolina Cobras (2000-01) posting a 15-25 record prior to his arrival in Columbus. He led the Cobras to a 7-7 mark in 2001, after going 3-11 the season before, and their first playoff berth, however, Kay vacated his position prior to the Cobras first round playoff defeat. Kay has already guided the Destroyers to the most wins in franchise history with 8 and can qualify for the post season for the first time in Columbus history and third in franchise history with a win.
IN THE 90's - SaberCats' head coach Darren Arbet continues to climb the AFL's all-time wins list. He joined the 90-win club on Apr. 29 when his team posted a 53-36 win at Los Angeles, reaching the milestone in his 131st game. Tim Marcum reached the 90-win mark in just 112 games and Danny White hit 90 in game No. 130. San Jose's win over Colorado and Mike Dailey on May 6 improves Arbet's career ledger against the four head coaches ahead of him on the list to 27-13 (.675). Arbet is 11-7 (.611) against Danny White, 6-2 (.750) against Tim Marcum, and 5-2 (.714) against both Dailey and Mike Hohensee.

TRENDS:
HOME COOKIN - The SaberCats conclude the 2006 regular season by hosting the Columbus Destroyers on May 13 in the first ever meeting between the teams. San Jose extended its home winning streak to five games with a 61-56 victory over Colorado on May 6 and since Darren Arbet became the team's head coach in 1999 has posted an impressive 48-11 (.814) record in regular season home games. Including playoffs, the SaberCats are 56-13 (.812) under Arbet in all games played in HP Pavilion. In their 12-year history the SaberCats have a 62-24 (.721) record in regular season home games.
GETTING OFFENSIVE - The SaberCats amassed 287 yards of offense in their 61-56 win over Colorado on May 6 and are within 280 yards of becoming the first team to accumulate 5,000 in a season. THAT 60's SHOW - San Jose reached the 60-point mark for the 6th time this season and the 55th time in team history in a regular season game in their 61-56 win over Colorado on May 6. The SaberCats have won four straight games when reaching the 60-point mark and are 5-1 this year. They also raised their all-time record to 48-7 (.873) when scoring 60 or more points in a regular season game. San Jose's last loss when reaching the 60-point mark came earlier this year on Mar. 12 in a 75-61 loss to Los Angeles.

HOMECOMING - For the second straight week a former SaberCat will start at QB against his old team. Columbus is led by 14-year AFL vet John Kaleo, who played with San Jose during the 1997 campaign throwing for 1,386 yards and 20 TDs on 115-of-215 passing. Kaleo started the first 7 games of the season for the SaberCats before being dealt to Anaheim midway through the campaign. San Jose defeated Colorado and John Dutton on May 6. Dutton played three seasons with San Jose (2000-02) and led the team to an ArenaBowl title in 2002 after taking over for the injured Mark Grieb late in the year.
GO THE DISTANCE - San Jose had its 1st kickoff return TD of the season when Charles Pauley scooted 57-yards late in the first half in a win over Colorado on May 6. San Jose had gone 14 regular season games without a KOR score, the longest stretch in team history, before Pauley's 1st career.
END ON A HIGH NOTE - Speaking of KOR scores, San Jose has been particularly effective in season ending games. The SaberCats have scored on a kickoff return in five of their 11 regular season finales and have totaled seven in those games. San Jose tied a team record with two KOR scores in the final game of the 2005 season against Georgia and ended the 2000 campaign with a pair of return TDs against Buffalo on July 22. Both games took place in HP Pavilion.
STOPS - San Jose's defense registered five stops in its win over Colorado on May 6 and has totaled 23 stops in its current 6-game win streak. During the run the unit has intercepted 8 passes, recovered 5 fumbles and forced 7 turnovers on downs. Sprinkle in two missed FGs and a safety and the defense is averaging nearly 4 full stops a game over the last six.
GROUND GAINERS - The SaberCats outran Colorado 33 to 10 in their win over the Crush on May 6, and have rushed for more yards than their opponent five times in their current 6-game winning streak. San Jose has totaled 153 rush yards to the opponents 72 during the stretch, being outrushed by only Las Vegas on Apr. 14. San Jose is 7-0 on the year when gaining more yards on the ground than its opponent.
STREAKING - San Jose won its 6th straight game with a 61-56 decision over Colorado on May 6, and now owns the longest win streak in the AFL this season. Dallas and Orlando each posted five straight wins. The streak is also San Jose's longest since winning six straight during the 2003 campaign from Feb. 22 to Mar. 28.
NOTES:
PLAYOFF BREAKDOWN - With their win over Colorado on May 6, the SaberCats clinched the Western Division crown and a first round playoff bye. San Jose can claim the top seed in the American Conference and home field advantage through the Conference Championship game with a win over Columbus coupled with a Colorado loss at Arizona on May 12. Six teams from the conference qualify for postseason play, two division winners and four wild card teams (best records among non-division winners). San Jose and Colorado have clinched the top two seeds and will wait for the Wild Card Round to conclude before knowing an opponent. The highest-seeded wild card team hosts the lowest seed and the second-highest seed hosts the second-lowest. Teams are re-seeded throughout the playoffs. Below is the American Conference breakdown through 15 weeks of the season.
AMERICAN CONFERENCE
1. Colorado 10-5 (Won Central Division)
2. San Jose 9-6 (Won Western Division)
3. Arizona 8-7
4. Nashville 7-8
5. Chicago 6-9 (win head-to-head vs. UTA)
6. Utah 6-9
7. Las Vegas 5-10 (win head-to-head vs. GRA)
8. Grand Rapids 5-10
9. Los Angeles 4-11
A myriad of possibilities still remain leaving Las Vegas and Grand Rapids mathematically in the hunt for a playoff spot. However, if the playoffs were to start this weekend, Arizona would host Utah and Chicago would visit Nashville. But, we all know the playoffs DON'T start this weekend.
TITLE TOWN - San Jose clinched its 6th Western Division title, and first since 2003, with a 61-56 win over Colorado on May 6. The SaberCats have won the most division titles of any team since the AFL went to a 4-division format in 1995. Arizona, Tampa Bay and Albany each have five division championships to their credit. Dallas won the East this season becoming the second team to win a title in two different divisions. The Desperados won the Central in 2003. Nashville (East-1997; South-2001) is the other team to claim different division titles. The league's tie-break format was used to determine a champion in case of a first place tie.
QUICK STRIKERS - Charles Pauley and Omarr Smith have scored within 60 seconds of each other twice during San Jose's current 6-game winning streak. Pauley returned a KO 57 yards for a TD and Smith went 42 yards with an INT just 37 seconds later against Colorado on May 6 giving San Jose a 12-point halftime lead in its 61-56 victory. On Apr. 7 in Tampa Bay, when the streak started, Smith returned an INT 16 yards for a score to break a 43-43 tie and 59 seconds later Pauley was credited with a safety when he tackled the Storm's Alphonso Roundtree in the endzone after the kickoff was fumbled.
ON THE MARK - QB Mark Grieb was surgeon-like in his dissection of the Crush defense in San Jose's win on May 6. Grieb completed over 82 percent of his passes (23-of-28) for 256 yards and 5 TDs without an INT in directing his team to its 6th straight win. Over the win streak Grieb has thrown for 1,809 yards with 30 TDs and just two INTs while completing 147-of-223 attempts for a passer rating of 120.7. Grieb has passed for 4,539 yards on the year, currently the 5th highest season total in AFL history, and needs just 258 yards to break his 2005 league record of 4,796. Grieb, however, trails Shane Stafford in the yards department and must throw for 26 more yards than the Tampa Bay QB and top 258 to grab the record. The 2002 Offensive Player of the Year increased his career total to 27,322 and claimed sole possession of 6th place on the AFL's career list moving ahead of Todd Hammel.

The holder of every team season record can also set a new record for completions if he connects on 5 passes against Columbus. Grieb also tossed 5 TD passes against the Crush upping his season total to 75 matching his 2004 total for the 2nd highest in team history. Grieb needs 10 TD passes against the Destroyers to set a new record.
FULL NELSON - Rookie of the Year candidate Ben Nelson equaled a team record with his 7th 100-yard receiving game of the season when he totaled 117 and 3 TDs on 9 catches against Colorado on May 6. Nelson increased his team-leading total to 1,314, the 5th highest single-season total in team history and the 6th best in AFL history among rookies. Nelson needs 59 yards to pass Troy Bergeron's 2005 rookie record of 1,372, but must also pass Austin rookie Derrick Lewis, whom he trails by 51 yards. Lewis has played in all 15 Wranglers' games while Nelson has appeared in 11 for San Jose.

It was Smith's 2nd INT return TD this season, the 6th of his career and 5th as a SaberCat, moving him ahead of Barry Wagner, Clevan Thomas and James Roe, who each have 4, into the club's all-time lead. Smith also tied Wagner for 3rd place on the team's career INTs list with his 19. Omarr had 8 picks with Tampa Bay in 2003 and now has 27 for his AFL career moving him past Los Angeles' Greg Hopkins into sole possession of 20th place on the AFL's chart.

ROE-LIFIC - Ironman of the Year candidate WR/LB James Roe moved closer to breaking his team record for receptions in a season. Roe caught 6 passes in San Jose's win over Colorado on May 6 increasing his team leading total on the year to 107, the 3rd highest in team history, and now owns the top three single season marks. Roe established the record with 116 catches last year and also had 115 during the 2003 campaign. Roe has caught at least 5 passes in every game, except the season opener when he sustained a concussion catching a TD pass on the first offensive series, and has a team record 5 double-digit receptions games. 'The Difference', as he is known, is also the team's leading tackler among players who are not DBs with 25.0, and has added 4 PBUs, a pair of FFs and an interception.

RUNNING MEN - It's no secret San Jose likes to run the ball, especially in the red zone, and this season is no different. FB Phil Glover carried the ball 7 times against Colorado on May 6 and moved ahead of Keala Keanaaina for the most attempts in a season with 50. Brian Johnson carried five times in the game, increasing his total to 48, tying Steve Papin with the 3rd highest season total. Both have played all 15 games this season and the team's rush yard leader won't be decided until after the dust settles on Saturday. Johnson ran for 18 yards against the Crush and now has a team-high 115 on the year, bettering Glover's 114. Glover is tied for the league lead with 13 rushing TDs while Johnson ranks 2nd with 12. The two have combined for 229 of the team's 260 rush yards, 98 of the team's 143 carries and 25 of the club's 34 rush TDs.

NICE CATCH - Not only does Brian Johnson run the ball, he has soft hands and nimble moves when catching passes out of the backfield. Johnson had a pair of receptions against Colorado on May 6, including his 1st career TD when he rumbled 12 yards early in the 2nd quarter on a FB screen. It was the first TD reception by a FB since Matt Kinsinger scored at Orlando on May 17, 2002. Johnson's 9 receptions on the year leave him one shy of the team's record for a FB, set by Tom Petithomme in 1995 and matched by Mike Maslowski in 1998.
IN THE COLORADO GAME:
San Jose and Colorado combined for 94 points in the 2nd and 4th quarters while scoring just 21 points in the 1st and 3rd quarters...The SaberCats held Colorado scoreless in the 3rd quarter and have posted a shutout quarter in each of the last 3 games...Brian Johnson had his 1st career touchdown reception and scored his 12th rush TD of the year...Marquis Floyd had his 2nd interception of the season...Barry Wagner scored his AFL high 127th career rush TD...Brian Schmitz attempted his 500th career PAT...Charles Pauley had his 1st career KOR touchdown and first by a SaberCat this season...Omarr Smith had his 6th career INT return touchdown and 5th as a SaberCat giving him the team's all-time lead. COLUMBUS PLAYERS TO WATCH:
DS JERALD BROWN - In his first year with the Destroyers and 3rd in the AFL, Brown has emerged as one of the finest defensive specialists in the AFL.
