San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE (Friday, October 28, 2005) - The San Jose Earthquakes announced the 2005 team awards today. Midfielder Dwayne De Rosario led the way as he earned the Budweiser Golden Boot and the team's Honda Most Valuable Player award. Pat Onstad was named the Earthquakes Defensive Player of the Year, while Craig Waibel was the team's U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year for the third consecutive season.
In two locally sponsored awards, Brian Mullan earned the California Customs award and Eddie Robinson received the Geneva McAlavey Community Outreach award for the second straight year. De Rosario, 27, had the best season of his MLS career in 2005, moving into the midfield after four seasons as a forward. The Canadian international scored a career-high nine goals to earn the Budweiser Golden Boot, given to the leading goal scorer on the team. He also notched a career-high 13 assists, just one assist shy of the club record of 14, set by Eddie Lewis in 1999. De Rosario also came up big in key moments, notching five game-winning goals and five game-winning assists. He was named the Earthquakes Maggiano's Player of the Month for September after scoring two goals and recording three assists in the month, while also earning MLS Player of the Week honors, following his two-goal performance against the Chicago Fire on September 21. His final goal of 2005, a powerful bending free kick into the upper corner on Oct. 15, was named the Sierra Mist MLS Goal of the Week and is a finalist for Sierra Mist Goal of the Year.
Onstad, who earns his second Earthquakes Defensive Player of the Year award, had one of the best statistical seasons as a goalkeeper in MLS history. Along with being one of only five players to start and play in every minute of all 32 MLS regular season games (2,880 minutes), the 37-year-old veteran led the League in wins (18), shutouts (12), goals against average (0.97) and save percentage (77.2 percent). With a talented group of defenders in front of him, the Canadian international served as the last line of a defense that surrendered a League-low 31 goals during the season. He became the third goalkeeper in MLS history to post a goals against average below 1.00 for a season while playing over 2,000 minutes. His 12 shutouts mark the second highest single-season total in MLS history. Onstad was also named the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year for the second time in three seasons.
For the third straight year, Waibel is the U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year. The 29-year old defender suffered a knee injury in May that forced him to miss all but six games in 2005, but he still contributed a lot of time and energy to the community. He was again heavily involved with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) and the team's Get A Kick Out Of Reading program. He also dedicated his time to events like coaching clinics, school assemblies, DPS Team Championships, a Toys for Tots drive and autograph signings. For his dedication to the local community, defender Eddie Robinson earned the Geneva McAlavey Community Outreach award for 2005. Robinson made the most official community appearances of any player on the team in 2005. He appeared at a number of schools to talk about reading and the importance of education, while also appearing at fundraising events, including a major fundraiser for Bay Area Scores, youth soccer practices and numerous team-sponsored events. The 27-year old Greensboro, NC resident has made a name for himself in his adopted Bay Area community.
Mullan, 27, is the California Customs award recipient, given annually to the player whose contributions on and off the field have helped the team be successful. In his third season with the Quakes, Mullan continued to shine, scoring three goals and recording six assists on the season, despite missing over a month of action due to an ankle fracture. A constant threat on the right wing, the five-year MLS veteran played in his 100th career game this season, while helping the Quakes to their best regular season in history. He also made numerous community appearances throughout the year.
