RSL Takes Home Grudge Match With a 1-0 Win Over Chivas USA

SALT LAKE CITY - Real Salt Lake ended their post-season grudge match against Chivas USA with a 1-0 victory tonight at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The game was decided by one goal from RSL rookie FW Jamie Watson, who came in as a second half substitute for MF Kevin Novak at the half.

The first chance for RSL came in the 23rd minute when RSL MF Tiger Fitzpatrick took a shot that was quickly deflected by Chivas ‘keeper Brad Guzan. In the 39th minute RSL FW Andy Williams tried to get a shot on goal but saw the ball go wide of the far post. Only minutes later, in the 41st, Williams took another chance but the ball was deflected off of CD Chivas DF Francisco Gomez and quickly caught by Guzan.

Just nine minutes into the second half, Watson found himself on the receiving end of a yellow card caution in the 54th minute for a foul on Chivas Midfielder Douglas Sequeira. Watson rallied back notching the only goal in the 60th minute when MF Clint Mathis slid a pass through to a streaking Watson who chipped the ball over the head of Chivas ‘keeper Sergio Garcia. Just five minutes later, RSL FW Melvin Tarley made a run into the Chivas area in the 65th minute but got one too many touches on the ball and found it scooped up by Garcia.

Mathis took a chance at the goal in the 74th minute, but the shot sailed wide of the far post. The South Carolina product got another shot at a goal in the 79th minute when he rocketed a shot over a wall of Chivas defenders on the free kick but the ball bounced high off of the crossbar.

The final shot for Real Salt Lake came in the 85th minute when MF Seth Trembly sent a shot into the Chivas goal area, which was snatched out of the air by Garcia.
