
San Diego Hosts Victoria For First Time

SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls and Victoria Salmon Kings have both played 70 games this season, but tonight will be the first-ever head-to-head meeting at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena.
SERIES HISTORY: The Gulls and Salmon Kings have met five times so far this season with San Diego holding a 3-2-0 series edge. The two teams will close out the season against one another tomorrow night. Tonight is Victoria's first-ever appearance at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena.

LAST HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING (FEB. 23 @ VIC): Max Birbraer notched three assists and netminder Mathieu Chouinard turned aside 26 of 27 shots, leading the Gulls to 4-1 victory against the Salmon Kings. As Chouinard was making key save after key save early in the game, Ian Forbes and Nick Ganga put San Diego up 2-0. Sean O'Connor gave the Gulls a commanding three-goal lead late in the second and they cruised from there. Victoria's Chris Corrinett tallied midway through the third, but Sylvain Deschatelets sealed the victory shortly after.
GULLS UPDATE: The Gulls (34-29-7) have been eliminated from the playoffs for the first time in their 10-year history... They will finish sixth in the West Division... San Diego is winless in its last four games (0-3-1) and five of its last six overall (1-4-1)... The Gulls are 22-8-4 at home and finished 12-21-3 on the road... Their 22 home wins is tied for eighth most in the ECHL... San Diego has outscored its opponents 119-95 at home but was outscored 119-79 on the road... The Blue and Orange are 8-4-2 at home and 5-13-1 on the road since the all-star break (13-17-3 overall)...
OTHER NOTES: San Diego is 28-4-2 this season when scoring three-plus goals in a game, but just 6-25-5 when scoring two or less... The Gulls have only out-shot their opponents seven times since the all-star break (33 games)... They are just 19 for 163 on the power play (11.7 percent) since the all-star break... Brett Draney, acquired at the trade deadline from the Idaho Steelheads, leads the club with 47 points (18g, 29a)... Birbraer is second on the team with 46 points (18g, 26a)...
VICTORIA UPDATE: Victoria (14-51-5) has also been eliminated from the Kelly Cup Playoffs and enters the day with 33 points, last in the entire ECHL... The Salmon Kings, who played their last home game on March 12, are finishing the season with a 12-game road trip... Victoria, which allows the most goals per game, has no one on its current roster with a positive plus-minus rating... The Salmon Kings, however, have won two of the last three head-to-head meetings with the Gulls... Seth Leonard has seven points (3g, 4a) against San Diego this season... The Salmon Kings are 6 for 20 on the power play against the Gulls this season (30 percent)... They have killed 19 of 22 San Diego power plays (86.4 percent)...
TRANSACTIONS: Veteran defenseman Jason Courtemanche was signed today... David Karpa was assigned to the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch Wednesday... Rookie defenseman Chet Ferreira was signed Wednesday... Brian Gornick was recalled to Syracuse on Monday... Curtis Brown was placed on team suspension Saturday... Yuri Moscevsky was signed Saturday... Andrew Canzanello was recalled to the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks on Friday, April 1... O'Connor and Ganga, both recovering from knee injuries, remain out of the lineup...
