San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls dropped their first contest of the season, a 3-0 loss to the Bakersfield Condors, returning from a three-game road trip with two wins and one loss (4 points).
Bakersfield opened scoring at 6:09 of the first period with a tally by Phillip McRae, assisted by Kyle Platzer. McRae's tally was his second of the season.
San Diego and Bakersfield traded penalties during the remainder of the first period and first 13:30 of the second frame before Leon Draisaitl connected on a pass from Matthew Ford for the Condors second tally of the game.
San Diego got into penalty trouble in the second period, putting them a man-down six times in the first 40 minutes of play.
Condors captain Ryan Hamilton notched a power play goal early in the third period, increasing the deficit to 3-0 in favor of Bakersfield.
A line brawl with 11:09 remaining in the third led to five game misconducts for the Gulls (Bickel, Mueller, A. O'Brien, Wagner and Zolnierczyk) and an additional five minutes for fighting and two minutes for roughing to Bickel. The Condors received four game misconducts (Kessey, LaLeggia, Moroz and Winquist) as well as a two minute penalty for roughing to David Musil in the altercations. San Diego's bench was diminished to only nine while the Bakersfield bench to 10.
Additional penalties in the remaining six minutes of the play put a comeback out of reach as the Gulls ended their road trip on a loss.
The Gulls return to San Diego for a pair of games over Halloween weekend, San Diego's first two contests vs. the Stockton Heat, affiliate of the NHL's Calgary Flames.
