San Antonio's Struggles against Corpus Christi Continue in Second Half Opener

San Antonio Missions News Release

In the first game of the season's second half, San Antonio managed just four hits as they dropped a 5-1 decision to Corpus Christi before a Tuesday night crowd of 5,108 at Wolff Stadium.

Tuesday got off to an inauspicious start for Missions right-hander Aaron Northcraft as Corpus Christi plated four runs on three hits and one error in the top of the first. Northcraft also walked one and hit a batter in the frame.

Fortunately, for San Antonio, Northcraft recovered from the rocky first inning, setting Corpus Christi down in order in each of the next three innings. Northcraft (1-1) would put up another zero in the fifth, his final inning of the night.

However, the early hole, turned out to be too much to overcome. San Antonio struggled against lefty Evan Grills, who allowed just one run on four hits and three walks, while striking out four over six strong innings. Grills (2-1) lowered his ERA on the year to a minuscule 1.91. Gabriel Quintana drove in the lone Missions run with a groundout in the second.

Relievers Ryan Thompson and Eric Peterson combined on three hitless innings to cap the Corpus Christi victory.

Texas League All-Star Nick Torres collected two of the four San Antonio hits. It was Torres' team-leading 25th multi-hit game of 2016.

San Antonio (0-1, 22-49) wraps up its four-game series against Corpus Christi (1-0, 48-23) Wednesday with a special 11:05 AM start. Kyle Lloyd (2-3, 4.89) will get the ball for the Missions, while the Hooks counter with fellow righty Edison Frias (3-0, 2.74).

Notes: San Antonio has now dropped 13 straight against Corpus Christi and 14 of 15 overall this season.
