San Antonio's First Half Ends with Extra-Inning Loss to Corpus Christi
June 21, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
Corpus Christi outlasted San Antonio 5-3 in 11 innings to conclude the season's first half Monday night at Wolff Stadium.
Dinelson Lamet got the ball for the Missions Monday in just his third start at the Double-A level. Lamet, who is San Diego's No. 10 prospect according to MLB.com, was coming off a rocky outing at Midland on June 15. He pitched much better against first-half champion Corpus Christi.
After working out of a jam in the first, Lamet retired the Hooks in order in both the second and third innings. His offense gave him a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third with All-Star shortstop Jose Rondon's RBI double to left off starter Kent Emanuel.
The Hooks pulled even against Lamet in the top of the fourth courtesy of Conrad Gregor's clutch, two-out ground rule double to right. Lamet set down the side in order in the fifth before allowing the Hooks to take the lead in the sixth on a J.D. Davis single up the middle. The Davis hit ended the night for Lamet, who fanned six in his five and a third innings.
San Antonio removed its young righty off the hook in the bottom of the frame when Ryan Miller followed a two-out Gabriel Quintana double with a triple into right center off reliever Francis Martes.
The game then turned into a battle of bullpens, with both units matching zeroes from the seventh through 10th innings.
Corpus Christi seized the game in the 11th against southpaw Kyle McGrath (0-2) with a three-run rally. Alejandro Garcia did most of the damage with a two-run single up the middle. Garcia would later score on a passed ball charged to Miller. The runs snapped the San Antonio bullpen's scoreless streak at 23.2 innings.
The Missions got one back in the bottom of the 11th courtesy of a Quintana homer off Aaron West (5-0). It was Quintana's team-leading seventh dinger of 2016. West retired the next two San Antonio batters to squash any comeback hopes.
San Antonio (22-48) and Corpus Christi (47-23) continue their four-game series on AARP $2 Tuesday presented by KCWX and iHeartRadio. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Aaron Northcraft (1-0, 2.31) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Hooks counter with southpaw Evan Grills (1-1, 1.98).
Notes: The Missions finished the first half with a 22-48 record, their worst mark in a half since the Texas League went to that format in 1977. San Antonio's previous worse half was in 2000 (23-47 in second half).
