Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - A two-run single by Alejandro Garcia in the 11th inning Monday night vaulted Corpus Christi to a 5-3 victory over the Missions in the first-half finale at Wolff Stadium.
The Hooks (47-23) authored the second-best half in club history. Last year's squad went 48-22 to start the season. Corpus Christi has won 18 of its last 21 games.
With the score level at 2, Conrad Gregor smoked a double to the gap in right off lefty Kyle McGrath (0-2). One out later, Roberto Pena hit a pop fly which clanked off the glove of first baseman Taylor Lindsey, who was ranging up the right-field line, putting a pair in scoring position. Garcia cashed in with a two-run knock up the middle for a 4-2 Hooks lead. Later in the frame, a passed ball charged to Ryan Miller enabled Garcia to bolt from third base for Corpus Christi's fifth run.
The Missions bullpen had mustered 23 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings prior to the 11th Monday night.
Aaron West (5-0) worked the final two innings for the victory. Gabriel Quintana's solo shot in the 11th was the first home run West allowed since April 28.
Kent Emanuel made the start for Corpus Christi, permitting one run through the first five innings. Emanuel stranded six over his final four frames and left the game with a 2-1 lead.
Francis Martes entered in the sixth and induced the first two outs quickly but back-to-back extra base hits by Quintana and Miller tied the game at two.
Martes rebounded by allowing two baserunners over the next three innings. He struck out seven against three hits and one walk on the night.
Derek Fisher walked three times, including an intentional free pass in 10th, and accounted for the Hooks' first two runs. Greogor's two-out double off Dinelson Lamet in the fourth plated Fisher to tie the game at 1. J.D. Davis drove in the short-lived go-ahead tally in the sixth with a base hit up the middle.
The Hooks, 13-1 against the Missions this year, have now taken 15 of 17 extra-inning games from San Antonio since 2012.
Lefty Evan Grills (1-1, 1.98) is slated to face Aaron Northcraft (1-0, 2.31) in the second-half opener Tuesday night. First pitch 7:05.
