San Antonio Missions News Release
A season-high crowd of 7,709 at Wolff Stadium witnessed San Antonio outslug Midland 11-9 Saturday night.
Just like they did in Friday night's win, the Missions took a 1-0 lead in the first. On Saturday, San Antonio took advantage of a pair of errors to plate the game's first run against right-hander Chris Jensen.
After Midland plated two of its own against righty Michael Kelly in the top of the second, Mike Olt drew the Missions even in the bottom half, when he led off with an opposite-field homer. San Antonio plated two more in the frame to take a 4-2 lead on Jensen (2-4) with RBI singles from Chase Jensen and A.J. Kennedy.
Olt spearheaded another two-run rally in the third with an RBI double to left. Gabriel Quintana followed with a sacrifice fly to center, increasing the Missions' lead to 6-2.
Kelly (1-0), making his Double-A debut Saturday evening, was very impressive, allowing just the two early runs on five hits and one walk, while fanning six over five innings. However, after Kelly's departure, the RockHounds nearly took away his victory opportunity by plating three runs on four hits against relievers Kyle Bartsch and Rafael De Paula.
In the bottom half of the inning, San Antonio opened up a commanding lead with a five-run outburst against righty Ryan Gorton. Nick Schulz capped the rally with a two-run double to left-center field. Schulz has hit safely in 11 of his 12 games since his promotion to Double-A.
Midland made things interesting in the ninth by plating four runs against Brandon Alger. Fortunately for the Missions, closer Jason Jester (fifth save) came on to record the final out and lock up the club's first consecutive wins since late April.
The 11 runs were a season high for San Antonio. Their previous high in runs was 10, which they did twice (both against Midland). In the win Saturday, every Mission batter finished with at least one hit, all but one scored a run and all but two drove in a run.
San Antonio (12-23) wraps up its four-game series with Midland (20-15) Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM. Kyle Lloyd (1-0, 3.63) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with fellow righty Raul Alcantara (3-1, 4.68). The first 500 kids 12 & under will receive a free Ballapeno picture courtesy of Kellogg's.
