Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - David Paulino and Kyle Smith limited Frisco to five hits as Corpus Christi doubled up the RoughRiders 6-3 Saturday at Whataburger Field before 5,727.
The Hooks (20-15), who've won six straight, stand 11-3 over their last 14. Frisco (23-12) has dropped five consecutive contests.
Paulino (1-1) scattered three hits and struck out two over five shutout frames and 63 pitches (44 strikes). He pitched around a hit batsman, an Isiah Kiner-Falefa single, and a fielding error to leave three RoughRiders aboard during the third.
Smith picked up a four-inning save despite yielding three runs in the ninth, one on a Ronald Guzman double in the wake of Ryan Cordell's opening walk, two on Garrett Weber's first home run, a two-out shot to left.
Victor Payano (4-1) walked two of the first three Hooks he faced in the second and paid for it. Danry Vasquez's infield single pushed Chase McDonald and Alfredo Gonzalez to second and third, respectively, before Teoscar Hernandez sent a two-out ringing double to left.
Consecutive no-out singles from Derek Fisher, Evan Gattis, and J.D. Davis loaded the bases for Corpus Christi in the home third, but Payano left three men stranded. The southpaw duplicated that feat the next inning; he allowed five hits and walked a pair over the two frames.
Payano's 93-pitch start covered four innings and included eight hits, four walks, and four strikeouts.
His relief, Jose Valdespina, was soon tagged for two runs. McDonald opened the fifth by doubling to right-center and an out later crossed on Vasquez's single. Valdespina balked Mott Hyde home after the inning was extended by shortstop Alberto Triunfel's error.
Davis rounded out Corpus Christi's scoring in the eighth, his third home run traveling 364 feet to left off Ryne Slack. Alex Bregman, who'd drawn his third walk of the evening, scored ahead of Davis.
The Hooks stranded 15 Saturday.
Center fielder Derek Fisher led all players with three hits. His average is .440 over the last seven games.
The series and homestand conclude Sunday at 2:05, when Corpus Christi left-hander Brian Holmes (2-1) faces Reed Garrett (0-0). The first 2,500 fans receive a Hooks Fly Swatter from Pest Patrol. It's also H-E-B Kids Day, so children run the bases postgame. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
