CORPUS CHRISTI - Left-hander Evan Grills pitched a one-hit shutout in his Double-A debut as Corpus Christi (19-15) swept a Texas League twinbill from Frisco (23-11) Friday at Whataburger Field before 5,973.

The Hooks have won five straight, Frisco has dropped four.

Grills, 23, was selected by Houston in the 10th round of the 2010 draft out of Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby, Ontario. He joined the Hooks Friday from Advanced-A Lancaster of the California League.

First Game - Hooks 5, RoughRiders 2

Keegan Yuhl (2-1) allowed two runs and five hits over five innings for the victory. He fanned three in a 93-pitch effort (61 strikes).

Brendan McCurry went six-up, six-down for his fifth save.

Evan Gattis extended his Hooks hitting streak to 10 games by placing Sam Wolff's 1-0 offering onto the left field berm walkway for an early 2-0 Corpus Christi lead. Alex Bregman lined a single into left one out before Gattis' fifth home run. J.D. Davis (single) and Danry Vasquez (double) also recorded hits, but Wolff left the bases loaded.

Ryan Cordell's ninth homer, a towering two-run blast, squared the contest during the Frisco third.

The Hooks retaliated with a three-run, five-hit, one-walk frame, Chase McDonald's two-run double highlighting the attack. Vasquez added a run-scoring single. Six straight men reached after the initial out.

Wolff (4-2) was peppered for 10 hits in four innings and walked three against two strikeouts. His pitch count was 86 (54).

Second Game - Hooks 6, RoughRiders 0

Cordell singled to begin the nightcap, reaching base for a MiLB-best 33rd consecutive game. Grills then threw a double-play ball to Garrett Weber and retired Lewis Brinson on a fly to center.

Vasquez's initial home run of the campaign, a 354-foot, two-out shot to left on a 91-mph pitch from David Perez (1-1), moved the Hooks to a 1-0 second-inning advantage.

Corpus Christi piled on four scores in the third, Derek Fisher's opposite-field bomb into the Hooks bullpen accounting for two runs. Mott Hyde, Bregman (RBI) and Davis doubled amidst the surge; Hyde crossing on an error charged to third baseman Luis Mendez.

In all, the Hooks sent 10 to bat and stranded three; RoughRiders manager Joe Mikulik was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Perez, lifted for Juan Grullon after 2 1/3, eight hits, five earned runs, and four strikeouts finished with a pitch count of 49 (29).

The Hooks sixth run crossed during the fourth as Teoscar Hernandez roped a lead-off double to left and scored an out later when Fisher bounced to third.

Grills (1-0) faced two over the minimum. He struck Zach Cone with a pitch in the second and issued a walk to Kellin Deglan the next inning. Grills struck out five and threw 80 pitches (53).

Saturday's pitching matchup: Frisco lefty Victor Payano (4-0) vs. David Paulino (0-1). The first 1,750 fans receive a Hooks U.S. Navy Jersey from CITGO.
