Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL - In a game that is so unpredictable the Jupiter Hammerheads managed to replicate almost the same offensive performance for three straight nights. For the third consecutive game the Sharks scored three runs despite collecting double digit hits. Thursday's 5-3 loss, the same score as Tuesday's defeat, led to a sweep by fellow Roger Dean Stadium tenant, Palm Beach.
Strangely the Sharks outhit the Birds in each game of the series but could not find away to pick up a win. On Thursday Jupiter had ten base knocks including two hits apiece by Matt Juengel and Colin Moran.
The Hammerheads never led in the game starting in the second when Jimmy Bosco hit a sac fly that plated Anthony Garcia who had reached on a double and advanced to third on an error by Juengel.
That unearned run would be the only one that Jupiter starter Trevor Williams allowed in his outing. Williams allowed two hits with five strikeouts in four innings. After he left the mound following the fourth it began to rain and shortly after the tarp was called onto field.
After a delay of 1:05 the game was resumed but at that point it was a battle of the bullpens as Williams and Palm Beach starter Kyle Helisek were both shut down.
The Jupiter bats were hot coming out of the break against Danny Miranda. Anthony Gomez stared things with a double and Moran followed with a single between short and third to tie the game at one.
Sam Alvis came out of the bullpen first for the Sharks and was spectacular. Alvis, who made one appearance for Jupiter earlier this season, was recalled on Thursday and he immediately made an impact tossing three perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts.
The Birds must have been happy to see Alvis out of the game in the eighth because they jumped on the second reliever of the night, Brad Mincey.
With runners on second and third and one out, Charlie Tilson gave the Cards the lead when he hit a single to right-center. Illdemaro Vargas would then hit a single of his own to make it 3-1 Palm Beach.
That would be it for Mincey as Reid Redman came out of the pen. Bruce Caldwell would then continue to be a pest as he hit a double into the gap in right-center to give the Cardinals a 5-1 advantage.
Jupiter would get a pair of runs in the ninth inning off Iden Nazario when Junegel hit a sac fly and Blake Barber hit a RBI single but Sam Tuivailala would get the final two outs with winning run at the plate to earn the save.
The Hammerheads will begin a six game road trip on Friday. The Sharks will play three games against the St. Lucie Mets before having an off day on Monday. The team will finish the trip with a three game set against Charlotte on Tuesday-Thursday. Jupiter will return to Roger Dean Stadium on Friday July 11th for a four game series with the Daytona Cubs.
