Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals tallied four runs in the eighth inning and held on to beat the Jupiter Hammerheads 5-3 on Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The victory seals the three-game sweep for Palm Beach. The Cardinals have won six straight against the Sharks and are ahead 7-4 in the 2014 Fins vs. Feathers Series.
Charlie Tilson broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning with an RBI single into right-center and Ildemaro Vargas made it a 3-1 Palm Beach lead on an RBI single through the left side. Jimmy Bosco, who notched two hits in the game, doubled to lead off the inning and Cesar Valera was hit by a pitch to join him on the base paths. Both runners scored in the four-run inning.
Bruce Caldwell drove in two runs in the eighth on a double to right-center field to extend the Cardinals' lead to 5-1. He has recorded 11 RBI in his last five games and leads the Florida State League with 28 RBI since May 29.
The Cardinals (11-4, 47-37) lit up the scoreboard first with a run in the second inning. Anthony Garcia doubled to deep center, advanced to third on an error and touched home on a Bosco sacrifice fly to put the Birds up 1-0.
Colin Moran drove in a run in the fourth for the Sharks to even the score at 1-1.
The Hammerheads (2-12, 29-54) got two runs back in the bottom of the ninth inning but Sam Tuivailala came in from the bullpen to erase any hope of a Jupiter comeback. Tuivailala was credited with his second save of the year for his efforts.
Kyle Helisek pitched three strong innings to start the game but didn't return to the mound after a 1:05 rain delay. He allowed two hits over the three shutout frames.
Danny Miranda (3-1) started on the mound after the rain delay and tossed four innings, surrendered one run on three hits and earned the win for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Bradenton Marauders on Friday night. RH Corey Baker (3-1, 1.87) will start for Palm Beach against RH Jason Creasy (4-4, 3.52) for Bradenton. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. There will be a huge fireworks display following the game as part of Roger Dean Stadium's Mega Bash event.
