Salute to Veterans December 9th

November 29, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - In June of 2023 a nuclear-powered Virginia Class submarine was christened the USS Iowa SSN 797; it will be formally commissioned by the United States Navy next summer. The Waterloo Black Hawks commemorate the new submarine during the team's Salute to Veterans Night, presented by American Pattern & CNC Works, on Saturday, December 9th.

All veterans in attendance for the 6:05 p.m. game against the Des Moines Buccaneers will receive a complimentary ticket. For the first time, Salute to Veterans Night will also feature a Veterans Resource Fair, hosted by Upper Iowa University, Iowa Works, and Black Hawk County Veterans Affairs. Those organizations and others providing services specifically for northeast Iowa veterans will be stationed around Young Arena's concourse with information about the many opportunities available to those who have served in the armed forces.

"I would like to thank American Pattern & CNC Works for their long-term support of our Salute to Veterans, and I am pleased that we are able to grow the initiative in new ways this year," said Black Hawks President and COO Joe Greene. "I am certain our fans will embrace the new jerseys we will wear, especially since they will support Americans for Independent Living, which is a great cause."

The primarily white jerseys feature an iconic Iowa symbol: the eagle which has adorned the state flag for more than a century, carrying its patriotic message: "Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain." The sweaters also feature U.S. Navy and Black Hawks emblems on the left and right shoulders respectively. They are striped in red across the waist and sleeves, with red numbers and name plates on the back. A live jersey auction will take place immediately after the December 9th game.

Americans for Independent Living is a Cedar Valley-based organization, which administers the Miehe Veterans Transitional Home on East 9th Street in Waterloo. The facility offers accommodations for servicemen in need, as identified by the Veterans Affairs Commission of Black Hawk County and the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program. The Miehe Veterans Transitional Home opened in 2017 with a goal of reducing veteran homelessness in Black Hawk County and was founded with key financial support by American Pattern & CNC Works.

The new USS Iowa SSN 797 will be the first warship to carry the state's name to the open seas since the decommissioning of the USS Iowa battleship BB 61 more than three decades ago. BB 61 valiantly represented Iowa during World War II, the Korean conflict, Vietnam, and the Cold War.
