Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Colin Rea surrendered just five hits over seven scoreless innings as the Iowa Cubs (65-55) defeated the Salt Lake Bees (51-69) by a final score of 6-0, Monday night at Principal Park.
Mark Zagunis brought in two runs on his 25th double of the year in the bottom of the first inning to give the I-Cubs an early lead. It marked the second time in the first three games of the series that Iowa has jumped ahead of the Bees with a two-run first inning.
Iowa continued to give Rea insurance runs, adding a run in the third, two in the fifth, and one more in the sixth.
For the second game in a row, Addison Russell registered two-hits including a home-run. In 13 games with Iowa since being sent down on July 24, the infielder is hitting .356 (16-for-45) with four doubles, three home runs and 12 runs batted in.
Dakota Mekkes and James Norwood backed up Rea, combining to toss two scoreless innings. Both Mekkes and Norwood struck out a pair of Bees hitters to complete the shutout win for Iowa.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Colin Rea earned his 12th win of the year to lead the PCL. It marked Rea's 10th quality start for the I-Cubs and is the first I-Cubs pitcher to win 12 games in a season since Jake Buchanan did so in 2016.
- After clubbing a two-run shot in the fifth inning, Addison Russell now has two hits and a home run in back-to-back games with the I-Cubs.
- Heading into the finale of the four-game set tomorrow, Iowa has yet to trail Salt Lake, outscoring them by a total of 18-5.
- After hitting another double in the first inning tonight, Mark Zagunis is now tied for the team-lead with 25 doubles despite starting the year with Chicago and joining the I-Cubs on May 25.
Iowa will look for the four-game sweep of Salt Lake in the series finale at 12:08 Tuesday at Principal Park. If Iowa wins, it will be the first time they have swept the Bees at home since July 11-14 in 2002. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
